Well Pablo, at this point in my life, being construed as the player may not be all that out of the realm of possibility, my friend.pablomastodon wrote:OMG...Michael's duo? Are you the biker or the player?

Yes, I'm afraid I'm headed in that direction myself...those XL Swedish Nord t-shirts are roughly equivalent to an American Medium (and look that way on me)Michael Wright wrote:Well Pablo, at this point in my life, being construed as the player may not be all that out of the realm of possibility, my friend.pablomastodon wrote:OMG...Michael's duo? Re: Riding a motorcycle with keyboard
Hi fellow nordies!
This post has been dead for a month or so :/ so I'm just trying my luck here
In response to the OP's question, yes its possible and I do so on quite a regular basis actually. I'm a keyboardist from Singapore, the traffic does get quite bad sometimes as we're a small city, especially in the town areas, where the gigs are
I own an electro 4d 61 key.
Its dangerous for sure, riding with a keyboard strapped to your back does affect your maneuverability on a motorcycle to quite an extent. Factors like weight shifting around, wind resistance do affect quite a fair bit when you're attempting to squeeze through traffic or take a particularly sharp bend. Care has to be taken to try and keep yourself in an upright position so the weight doesn't fall off to one side and screw up the balance, so no Moto GP style cornering :DD
Things you'll probably need to consider are firstly, a good gig bag. Something that you're confident WILL NOT break off, especially the straps, with the additional stress from wind resistance. Over here in Singapore, we have easy access to only a few better quality cases. I opted for a Mono M80 gig bag and so far for the past year it has been holding up well. I'm a small fella, but for everyone its probably important to be able to adjust the straps fairly tightly so the keyboard is snug on your bag and doesn't shift around. The M80 case has a little strap to tighten the two shoulder straps together and that helps ALOT. And oh, the position of the straps, if its too high up the keyboard will not sit nicely on the back seat of your motorcycle. Probably depends on your height as well. Just try backpacking your keyboard and sitting down on chair if you don't get what I mean. I still end up going up to 90-100kmph, which isn't fantastically fast, but any faster and I'll probably get fined over here
A smaller size and lighter keyboard will definitely help, which is why I chose the electro 61 over something like that stage series.. which I would love to have
(but the draw bars are also part of the equation here OMG I LOVE IT xD)
And of course, the type of motorcycle. I'm riding a Yamaha Dragstar 400 (called a V Star I think? In the U.S.) basically a V-twin cruiser type bike. Its big and wide, stable enough. And its low, which DEFINITELY HELPS when you're trying to squeeze through traffic. Oh and also that helps when you're entering low height clearance areas like indoor carparks.. thats one of my greatest fears. I have not attempted this on a sports/street/tourer type of bike so I have no idea, I would imagine it to be a little tougher, plus the chance your nord will hit the ceiling with a terrifying bang
The max I ever carried was myself (50+ kg), my nord electro, my friend (roughly 70-80kg) plus his electric 5 string bass. That was a little insane I think my bike was complaining haha. Not something I look forward to doing again.. but its possible. Also do note that Singapore is a small country so my trips are averaging like 20-30km probably maximum 45mins of traveling time. Trust me if you try this, your abs WILL get a work out! (6 packs anyone??)
If anybody has recommendation for a solid custom gig bags maker do hit me up for PM though.. I've been looking for something just as sturdy or better than the MONO so I can afford to carry larger keyboards. Or post it here if the OP doesn't mind since a quality gig bag is part of the equation of having a safe journey with your keyboard on a motorcycle.
Hope I gave some helpful input guys. RIDE SAFE AND STAY ALIVE.
Cheers
