Sorry, yes you are of course absolutely right. While very early, I just feel the Telharmonium is a good example of a good idea done badly. But of course it was early, and to attempt to build a synthesizer that uses purely electric generation is a feat in its own right - like the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexanderson_alternator used to generate a carrier wave for radio transmission, the last surviving example of which is actually in Grimeton in Sweden (originally built in 1924, so not too far before the Ondes), and is powered up once a year for demonstration purposes. Unlke the Telharmonium, the Alexanderson Alternator was a commercial success; the station in Grimeton was reportedly operating until 1996.
