No, that's not right either. In fact the Leads and Racks always respond to incoming MIDI data no matter whether the slot LEDs are on or off.

The slot LED on/off does not (perhaps confusingly) indicate if the corresponding slot is enabled, it indicates that the slot is active, i.e. that it responds to the keyboard and front panel controls.

The concept is geared towards the keyboard units. Pressing multiple slot buttons causing multiple slot LEDs to light up causes the machine to layer the indicated slots so that they are all played from the keyboard at the same time. Only the one flashing is still the 'active' one as far as the front panel is concerned. And if I remember properly, assuming you have separate MIDI channels set up on the different slots, when playing the keyboard it still only transmits on one of the channels (the lowest one or the active one, can't remember), so if you record your performance to a MIDI sequencer and play it back you'll hear only one of the slots being played, which is a bit confusing.

So pressing multiple slot buttons doesn't really do anything useful on the rack units. But with just one slot button lit it indicates which slot is being controlled by the front panel. All of them always respond to MIDI. The only way to disable that is to set the MIDI channel for the slot to OFF.

Clarification: Riacrd is correct that both keyed and rack versions will always respond to incoming midi according to their midi channel settings. During common usage from the front panel, however, keyed unit slots are enabled/disabled according to the slot buttons, which is what I was referring to when I wrote that. Folks who become accustomed to that behavior on the keyed version are then confused when they work with a rack version, because its behavior does not follow the same rule book.

Bless,

Pablo
