When I switched to a cable with 1/4" TS plugs (mono), the problem went away and the levels were as they should be. With my Virus it worked okay with both types of cables, but that was because it can either send a balancer or unbalanced (line-in) signal, based on the type of plug you plugged into the synth.
This!!!! I was really at a loss for a while. Switched to a mono cable and it fixed it. Thank you mjbrands!
