In your case everything is synchronized, everything has the same latency, that's what matters.

Sorry, i meant that if I did the same as you and had a drum loop on the DAW, how much latency would I have? Do you guys know if there is a way to measure latency? I am very interested in starting to do DAW stuff, but latency issues have always drawn me away.

Gustavo, you mentioned you are a linux user. Did you try Rosegarden? You also need to install another program called Jack (as well as its GUI) to be able to read and write the MIDI and audio ports with little latency. Since they are free you might have a go with those first (and yes the NS2 usb connection gets detected in Jack).

Thanks for the tip, I haven't tried anything audio in linux since 3 years ago I had huge troubles getting it to work with my EMU 1212m card (which I no longer use, but still own).

Currently I am mainly using Windows 8 because I got it for free on my school, also for my DAW I've been a REAPER user for almost a year (even though I only use it to record sometimes). I have some free time, so I might go and install a linux distro (had my eyes on linux mint debian edition) on my new 64GB USB 3.0 thumbdrive, just because I can and then see if all audio things run smoothly.

That being said, and back on topic. What do you guys think of the things I recorded (all criticism welcome, even "negative" ones!!)

IMHO, you and I need to reach a point where we don't have to think too much about technical things while playing, like fingerings, next chord or next note, in order to free our brain and focus on what we hear and feel.
On that way, we should avoid midi and its quantization and use audio loopers instead.
Thank you for talking about Reaper, I gave it a try again, and there is a function I like a lot, that I did not find under Ableton :
- make a time selection
- switch on the "Repeat" function
- record
=> you end up with all your "takes" !! and can switch between them or spread them along the time lime if they are good.
Ok that's basic, but the rediscover of that, in the context of "audio/live" (no "midi/quantize") recording, it beats what I know of Ableton live. Edit: you play/loop until you're in time and don't need any quantization or other modifications.
That, plus the audio and midi latency I got better in Reaper than with Ableton ... makes it a nice software today

Nice to know Reaper has less latency. I was considering Ableton Live due to it being marketed as being THE loop based DAW. But in Reaper you have the loop within selection thing, and I think there is a way in its settings to use it as a loop recorder. But since I have the Kaossilator 2 and KOPRO, I mostly use those when I want to do loop stuff. Maybe I'll try this week to do some loop based music on REAPER, see how that turns out. Something that may help recording: Options>Preferences>Tracks/Send Defaults set your Record Config to Stereo L+R and select Record Arm. That way each time you add a track (CTRL+T) it is ready to record.

Also, this time I used midi just because I never had... I think its an excellent way of "writing" stuff. Like this week we are rehearsing Grover Washington's Just the Two of Us. And I believe I am very prone to forgetting how to do the intro. But if I record it in midi, I can hear it when my NS2 is connected and I can see the notes being played.
