Which Grand piano do you use?

What is odd is that the Nord doesn't offer different tunings. I assume they are equal temp' rather than concert stretch.

Even my crappy old clavinova had a load of different tuning options. For such a gucci instrument, this is odd.

I use the Yamaha Grand (studio) and the Steinway Model D. I deleted the horrible electric grands.

I mainly use uprights but I find the Yamaha Studio Grand 2 and the Bösendorfer the nicest grands.

I hope, some time, we'll get a CP-80 sound with pedal down samples!

It says on the Nord website this Grand Piano is NEW (its the one at the top of the list). But how new is it ?? Or was it new like 12 x months ago ??

And how does it compare to the other Grand Pianos mentioned in this thread ??

Monsterjacks: it has been a good while since they released a piano sample..a white upright was rumoured for last spring but never materilialised...the last release was well over a year ago, since then, just sample library (synths, bass, etc) have been released...

jazzystu: I agree, different temperements, esp historical for baroque music, should be selectable...

So are there Synth sounds available ?? i did not know this, i still only have the original factory ones and a few i downloaded from this site which were created by members. Are they on the Nord Site and will work on Nord Stage Classic ??

I tend to use the Bright Grand when I want more presence and a bit more of a sparkle. I tend to use this for situations where it's just me and a singer, say, or when I need to cut through the mix. I use the Grand Imperial for more laidback, jazzy sort of stuff.

I was using the Lady D at first but after a while it got boring and now its history for me, the bright grand is what i generally go for when playing with full on band. For something lighter i use the Bosendorfer. The CP80 is there as well, although i couldnt really find a fit for the other electric grand. The ambient grand is quite nice for a dreamy patch. The upbrights are there for some specific tunes. I must say that the upbrights are very unique. I'm glad Nord included those in their library.

I thought if you have a string, the actual harmonics are mathematically out of whack, so if you tune a piano to itself, the treble is a bit sharp (relative to something like a trumpet) and the bass a bit flat. So if you want your piano to sound right, you have to flatten the treble and sharpen the bass by "the right amount" (which is the deviation).

I remember that the Rhodes manual came with a stretch chart which enabled you to get "that sound" by stretching it.

The thing being that a stretch tuned piano is musically wrong, but sounds right and an equal temperement piano is musically right (and sounds as such with other instruments) but sounds unremarkable by itself.

On a piano with a button, the difference is pretty marked. (that's without going into the other 1,000,000 approaches to tuning a piano).

That's how I understand it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
