Hi,
can you let us know a bit more on the following questions:
- are you on a Windows or on a Mac computer?
- how does the full file name looks like after renaming the extension to .zip?
- did you try to unpack the file directly from Windows Explorer or Mac Finder, or do you use a separate program to unpack and if so which one is it?

Is it possible to extract certain elements of a backup ie samples and transfer to keyboard rather than restoring the entire backup through stage manager?
Have you read the previous answers? It is already explained there (rename to .zip and unzip the pick up the individual files you need )
when I rename to .zip it won't let me unzip it unfortunately
As Schorsch said, you should try to use a specific unzip app like Unarchiver, not the Mac OS internal unzipper.
About the blank icon, probably icon association is missing for that filetype, adding it requires some Mac OS internals skills as you have to modify some NSM9 config file (not really worth it, or not? I'd live with it being blank)

Forget the first question in my previous post, I haven’t noticed that you are on MacOS. Just follow Max’s advice and let us know the outcome

I repeat the question: how are you unzipping? Did you use Unarchiver
https://theunarchiver.com/ ? (I have a Mac and a NS3 and I can unzip NS3 backups with no issues with it...)
Post a screenshot of how you rename the file and the error you get.
