That puzzles me, why would a keyboard require a firmware update just for a new MacOS? not come across that before, makes no sense. perhaps it's more to do with the software nord could be producing? just theory.

This update has nothing to do with Catalina.

that's the point I wanted to make.

obviously the test processes update must be related to potential new software nord might release or changes forthcoming. we can only but wait and see. both my machines are updated either way and working fine.

Usually that type of "production test routine" updates are related to the introduction of new service tests or modification of existing ones (to add features or due to a change in some component, even secondary but part of the test)

Your best option is to contact Clavia through the website and ask them what versions of MacOS support the updater. It could be the updater no longer supports 32-bit systems.

That should be noticed before downloading the update...what do you think ?

I don't think any manufacturer has an obligation to support other systems that are no longer in active support by their own manufacturers.
