Isn’t the keyboard action made by Fatar? Maybe call them.
Not sure about the calibration thing or how it’s done but replacing the contact strip would seem the logical thing to do.
Does seem strange that the problem is on those black keys used in ‘Superstition’.

I have been having this exact same problem only with the Clav cutting off the note early at certain velocities on Eb(6 i think) on my NE5 73 since brand new. I had been meaning to post this on here, but never got around to it. Your theory re: the high trigger point seems solid. Since it was only this one note, I hadn't got round to investigating fixing it yet, I thought it was a problem with the sample.

Let me know if replacing the rubber contact strip works, and if you find any issues with calibration.

The calibration is done by Nord at the factory and the settings are saved to a chip connected to the keys - at least that is how it is mentioned in some old posts here and shown in a video previously linked also. Fatar is not involved in the calibration.

I was able to tell it wasn't the sample, by transposing the sound by one octave. The problem key stayed the same, but the pitch I heard was obviously a different sample. If you try that, you can establish that the problem is with the key itself. Good luck, hopefully it is the same issue.

Basically I think playing the particular song on those keys quite heavily, has worn out (or flattened) the rubber contacts on the rubber strip itself. This leads to a note trigger 'off' event somehow being created before the key is released. The low release trigger point is VERY low, I only need to lift the key about 3 mm on the clav sound for it to stop. Other sounds it is more like 7 mm. I guess it is quite sensitive.

Try connecting a midi cable directly from the OUT to the IN socket and switch LOCAL 'off'. You should find the issue dissapears. Because I don't think the 'Low' trigger off messages are transmitted via MIDI.

So, after swapping a piece of the rubber contact strip to the malfunctioning key (s), I haven't noticed any change in the evenness of the notes.

I did a little test using Logic Pro, trying to trigger a range of notes simultaneously at the same velocity, and although there are some differences - it seems no more varied than other parts of the keyboard which have not been tampered with.

I'm going to try changing the rubber strip for a new one and see what it is like then. Thanks for your input everyone - I'll update when the parts arrive. About two weeks.

Fixed!

Hi Everyone, my Electro 5D is fixed now. I replaced the contact strip for the faulty keys. I just used a 12 contact piece.

The notes are all responding correctly. There may be a very slight variation in the the stiffness of the keys, but not perceptible to myself anyway in normal use. I wouldn't be able to tell unless someone showed me the keys that had the new rubber underneath.

Hopefully it is all ok now! Cost around £20 in total for the contact strip + Delivery from USA to UK.

Also, the version of superstition I play was from YouTube video but I can't seem to find it. If anyone is interested let me know and I can break it down...

Thanks for your input everyone :)

Would you mind sharing which clav model you are using, and with what settings?

Yes, would like to know too. Can’t seem to get a good clav sound from my Stage 2 and use my Korg Triton instead.
Well done getting the keys fixed

Hi, Yes it's nice that it is all working again!

Ok, these are the settings I'm using in the video, and also seem to work well with the covers bands :

Clav settings
Model : B

KBD TOUCH : 1

Bass : +2.6db
Mid freq : 2.6Khz
Mid gain : +8.6db
Treb gain : +9.0db

Delay : ON
Dry/wet : 6.8
Delay Tempo : 47ms
Feedback : 0

Thats what I'm using here. The video is just a 'Superstition' Drums only mix easy to find on Youtube.

Hope that helps.

A x
