How do you setup an expression pedal for the master volume?

Post by Yphs_mst »

Hi all,

I just received a stage 3. Im a new user, moving from hammond sk series. I understand organ swell or control pedal can be used to control the volume of the organ, but how about piano and synth section? How do I use my expression pesal to control the master volume? Please advise. I cant find this in the manual (or orobably missed it).

Thank you in advance.

Can't you morph the section volume?

Yes, I morph the volume for each program and section rather than have the expression pedal set for master volume.
I wanted to use the organ swell but I think that would have meant 2 pedals so I just plug the FC7 into the control input.

Morph is such a valuable and versatile function, and you have only one pedal to morph with, it's a shame to waste it on using it as a mere master volume control. Instead, I'd just use a regular volume pedal on the outputs (something like a Boss FV-30L). Then you'd have your master volume, and you'd still have your control pedal available to do all kinds of cool morph things.

Please do not sssume that I am ONLY using morph for master volume. Yes it can do a lot of creative things, but my original question applies when I need to turn on organ, piano and synth sections at the same time and be able to control the volume.

So, can I assign the control pedal to control two volume sections? How do you do that? Assign to one first and then do it to the other? Again, I am a newbie in Nord family.

And thank you for the pedal suggestion. I may consider that too.

Got it. But still, *any* time you're using that pedal for master volume, it's not available for something else. And since master volume is pretty useful and yet also easily done another way, I still like the idea of a dedicated volume pedal that always leaves the control pedal free for other purposes, while itself being always available for volume. Just something to consider...

As for the rest of your post, it sounds like you've got it right. Check this video, from about 2 minutes to 4 minutes:

It shows using morph to have the mod wheel control volume for two sections' sounds at once, but obviously, you can do the same for the pedal. And while the video shows opposite directions (one volume going up and the other going down as you move the controller), obviously, you can have them go the same direction as well, which is what you want.

The video is very helpful. Thank you! You are absolutely right to have a separate pedal just to do volune.

I use a Ymaha FC7 in the control input, mainly doing Morph, volume or something else...And a second one plugged into the swell pedal for the Organ Swell....And you still have the Mod Wheel available for anything you want ....Super powerful feature....

I use two Moog EP-3 expression pedals in my Nord-only setup. One goes into the Organ Swell input with its setting changed to Volume so that it controls the master volume and then the second Moog goes into the Control Pedal input and acts as a wildcard controller for anything I need. Usually it’s set to morph the volume of an individual section.

I still wish there were a way to hard set those two inputs to act as the independent volume controls for each panel.
