Problem with external section control

Hi all,

I just extended my Stage Compact by Kurzweil K2500RS module and my Stage is used as the master of cause as well. I control the K2500 by external section and I have been spending lot of hours facing the serious problem. I had idea to use a program (like Piano) in the Stage and to add sound from the K2500 (like Pad), by External Section activation ) in some time.

It only works if the External Section is activated in the program directly (Activated Ext Sectional saved in the program). Stage changes program in the K2500 in this case without any problem. On the other hand the Stage does not send program change to K2500 (or generally to other MIDI unit) if the External Section activated manually during playing one program.

I afraid that it is a general system problem. The External Section is not able to send any midi message (like defined program number) if activated only.

Who has an experience in this area? I do not believe that I am only one with this problem.

hi Paji!

if i've understand you correctly, you don't want to have the EXTERN section activated when you choose your program?
may i ask why? you don't want the pad-patch to sound from start?
if you want to send midi messages on program load, the extern section has to be activated. i don't think there's any way around it.

perhaps you should consider using a control pedal plugged in the CONTROL PEDAL jack on the back of the Stage (to control expression)?
or send MIDI CONTROL CHANGE 11 (expression) with value=0 on program load?
or send VOLUME level=0 on load if that's is a better option for you?

in these cases all you have to do is use the swell pedal or turn the PARAMETER ROTARY ENCODER when you wanna bring in the pad from your Kurzweil.

hope this helps! in other case, please clarify why you don't want to have the extern section activated on program load.

Hi Henrik.

I have the sounds arranged and saved for each my song separately in the programs. Some of these songs started with piano only and additional voices are added via EXTERN from Kurzweil during the song.

I pointed that Stage send program change to external unit (Kurzweil in my case) only if EXTERN is activate from beginning. I find one way only how to solve it:
1. to load program with active EXTERN (Stage changes program in Kurzweil)
2. to switch EXTERN Off
3. to start playing song with piano only
4. to switch EXTERN on during the song again.

I am not able to use it without step 2. It is my point.

I did not try to use your recommended PEDAL CONTROL yet.

Hi againg Paji.
i am not familiar with Kurzweil, but usually (depending on which "mode" you're working in) you may discover note cut offs when switching the EXTERN section on/off. therefore i recommend you to set the value of VOLUME or EXPRESSION to zero "0" on program load.

VOLUME=0; will do fine if you're working in a mode like "program mode", "voice mode" or something like that. this can be assigned directly to the PARAMETER knob on the Nord Stage by pressing the button underneath. "VOLUME" lid will light.

EXPRESSION=0; is a better solution if you're working in a multitimbral mode, like "multi mode", "seq mode", "song mode" or something else. this function can also be assigned to the PARAMETER knob by pressing the button underneath so that the "MIDI CC" lid will light up. then setting the MIDI CC (control change data) to "11" (in the MIDI menu!). this function is exactly the same as connecting in a swell pedal to the CONTROL PEDAL jack on your NS...
