Sample Editor, Endless Loop Possible?

Post by DJKeys »

I have recorded a .wav file for a part in a song where I cannot play both parts simultaneously. I have reached the point where I can trigger the sample and it will play once and loop once (holding down the sustain pedal). I then have to retrigger the sample. I would like to just be able to hold down the pedal until I don't need the sample anymore.

I cannot find an option in Sample Editor for a continuous loop and wanted to know if it is possible to do this-

No way to set such a behaviour in the Sample Editor, but you can use the Hold function of the NS2 Synth to achieve the same without using the sustain pedal, just play the note that you want to be held and then engage the Hold (even if no Arpeggiator is active, it will keep the note on until you disengage it)

PS: the trick I used for the Baba O'Riley patch, to switch between slots but keeping the Synth on the unselected slot running, remember? ;)

Awesome! I did this for my Baba patch too, long time ago though.

Thanks, Max!

What about maxing out the release time...?

Maxing out the release works to an extent, but the sample will ultimately fade out. Using the Hold button is the best way to keep a loop running from my experience (Eminence Front loop).

This trick can be used to make a "poor man's drum machine," too. Actually, a rich man's drum machine, I guess, but you get the idea. Grab some isolated tracks from your band recording and mix/master them down into a mono (saves on file size) .wav file and dump 'em into your NS2. Next time drummie has a hissie fit tell her/him to take a hike!

Actually, none of these ideas accomplished the goal. The recording plays through one time (which includes the loop) and then stops. Holding the key down, sustain pedal, hold button or release do not change this behavior. Hold button is more convenient than the sustain pedal, though.

Not a big deal, as I only have to retrigger at the end of the phrase. I could just extend the wav file so that is is long enough

Thanks for all of the input!

DJ, you're doing something wrong then. On the 2nd tab in Nord Sample Editor there is a place where it is possible to select No Loop, Short Loop or Long Loop. Make sure you have it set to long loop before generating the .nsmp file.

I do not do this often, but I have a couple friends who work as gtr/drums duo. From time to time the drummer (who is also lead singer), wants to take off for his kid's Little League or to go out of town or something and I fill in so that the gtr player doesn't have to lose the paycheck for that night. I did this just last week. Got my 32 bar drum loop installed and hit the correct note once and play for 20 minutes on it without stop and without retriggering the sample. Tempo is adjusted by playing up or down 1/2 step or whole step.

Note that it is useful to turn on mono mode so that you can't accidentally play two notes at once, hearing the same drum pattern in two different tempos can be distracting! ;-)

Give me a shout when you're with your instrument if you continue to struggle with this.

Bless, Pablo

Thanks, Pablo-

I did have the sample set for long loop, but will regenerate it just to be sure. I will also re-read the SE manual LOL.

Thanks again-
