Nord Piano Comparison Video - NordStage2

Post by miloreason83 »

Hi fellas!

I spend my time searching for a Nord Piano which I really like, of course it took me many hours...download the piano, transfer to keyboard, test...download the piano, transfer to keyboard, test...yeah! many hours!

So, I decide to make a video about this.

I downloaded all the Grand Pianos in Clavia´s Website in all versions: S, M, L, XL and compared all sounds.

I used a Nord Stage2 with:
Italian Grand
Bright Grand
Grand Imperial
Grand Lady D
Studio Grand 1
Studio Grand 2
Concert Grand Close
Concert Grand Ambient

I hope this video helps anyone interested in this theme.

thank you!

Wow thank you! Well, they all sound terrific! I guess my faves are the XL Bosendorfer and the Italian Faz. I've had some excellent pro sound men tell me that the Nord pianos sound fantastic out front.

Nice work man. You played that theme especially nice with the first two sounds of studio grand and Grand lady.

Great work' thanks for sharing your effort! It is good you played the phrase every time and not just used a MIDI recording, in this way you adapted to each sound and this gives a great added value to the test.

Only limit (not to be perky, but to share a thought) is that you play a quiet, legato phrase with not much dynamics, so this shows just part of each piano's character (but testing each piano with different phrases/playing styles would be a crazy effort!) ;)

Yes, a nice effort! But I think it is worth noting that, while it's a nice way to get a sense of the general characters of the different pianos, this one passage may not really be useful for telling very much about the different size versions of the same piano sample. For example, the only difference between M and L is in the lowest and highest keys, and almost none of this passage includes those keys, so the M and L difference is not actually represented here. The "dynamic crescendo" feature (missing on S version) is only apparent when repeatedly hitting the same key with the pedal down, so obviously, that's not a difference you can tell from this passage. The pedal-up string resonance (also missing on the S version) is also not demonstrated in this passage, so that's another difference between the sizes that you would not be able to detect from this video. The XL version differs by having more actual samples (rather than stretching a smaller number of samples over more keys), so that's a difference you might notice more in a passage that has a greater number of different notes. (The number of notes in this passage that happen to be stretched in the non-XL version but not in the XL is unknown.)
