Stage 88 (Classic) shutting itself off
Hi all,
I bought a used Stage 88 Classic a few months back, but it seems to have an issue. Often when playing it, the keyboard (seemingly randomly) shuts itself off, then restarts itself and then gets stuck in an endless loop of shutting down and restarting, which only ends when I shut it off with the power button. I took it back to where I bought it from (Long and McQuade), but we weren't able to replicate it in store, so they couldn't help. However, it happens enough at home that I'm nervous about taking it on gigs.
I've been trying it with different power sources, so I don't think it's a case of power supply.
The problem is that I can often practice for hours without it happening once, but then there are also days where it happens the moment I turn it on.
I was able to get some video of it this morning.
Any suggestions? I haven't been able to find anything online about this happening to anyone else.

What I would do is to try reinstalling the OS and if that does not cure it take it back to the store and show them the video. Let them sort it out.

Re: Stage 88 (Classic) shutting itself off
To me it looks like a power problem. Things like those have happened to other electronic devices i have owned. I would try to see if it happens somewhere else that's not your house. I would also try getting a power chord replacement, it is kind of generic so it shouldn't be a problem.
Updating the SO could cause more trouble if it is an electric issue since it could loose power during the upgrade. That would corrupt the memory with it needing another clean SO install. And so you could enter an endless cycle.
Saludos,
Gustavo

Re: Stage 88 (Classic) shutting itself off
The Nord contains a power supply board which takes the wall outlet power and converts it to various smaller DC voltages for use inside the instrument. The mainboard contains circuitry which monitors those voltages for consistency and when something doesn't look right, it can trigger a reboot. This is partly a protection mechanism designed to prevent damage. If, upon completion of the reboot, it again senses the same problem it again triggers a reboot. There is no magical software cure which will fix the vicious cycle in which the Nord is apparently stuck. This is certainly a hardware problem.
The question in this case will be to isolate the cause of the retrigger. It could be that the instrument will respond favorably to a good thorough cleaning of the electrical contacts. It could also be that one or more solder connections may have degraded over time and need attention. And it could be that one or more component parts have failed entirely. The diagnosis is best left to the electronics tech who has it open on her or his bench, but I thought your customer might like to have a general overview of what some of the possibilities are.
Canadians can write to me at my work address about this (and any other) problems they may be having:

I have the exact same problem as the OP. I have a Nord Stage Classic 76 Rev B and I have encountered the endless reboot issue. I'm curious if the OP's issue was resolved and if so how?
P.S Thanks to Pablo for the recommendations.

Re: Stage 88 (Classic) shutting itself off
I have been experiencing the same intermittant power on/off issue and, following Pablo Mastodon's lead, I've taken my Stage classic into the shop. Will write back when we get this figured this out.

I know this is VERY old, but you didn't write back and I'd very much like to know if the issue has been solved and how?jpag57 wrote:I have been experiencing the same intermittant power on/off issue and, following Pablo Mastodon's lead, I've taken my Stage classic into the shop. Hello, I have been experiencing exactly the same problem on a classic NS 76 (rev B). I solved it during a short time by opening and cleaning the keyboard. It worked well during about one month.
Since 3 days, I have the problem again.
On a french forum, someone suggest some capacitors could be out of order. I have no skill in electronics. Help !!
