Nord Stage Backup & iPad??

Post by GuyManning »

Hi
planning on going abroad with keys and want to make sure that I have some form of backup in case the NS2 dies whilst out of the country...but I will only have an iPad with me
Is there recommended way of backing the NORD data OFF (and somehow use the iPad?) so I could use it to program another NS2 if mine got busted etc?

Ta

The only thing you will be able to do with the ipad is to take a backup photograph of your Stage! :D (sorry I could not resist!).

Now seriously, since you can only back it up with the Sound Manager, your will need a Mac or a PC to restore the sounds. If you can borrow one, you need to take with your the backed-up file, a copy of the Sound Manager (for PC or Mac) the USB driver for Win and the USB cable. Not very handy...

There was something about the USB protocol and ipads and apple licensing if I recall correct? I would not mind an Android version.

At the moment you can only make the backup on a PC/Mac then store the backup file on your iPad, using iTunes or a software such as iExplorer (which basically means using it as a USB-memory) but you will need a PC/Mac at the destination (and with the same SW) to restore it

In my dream, it's wireless (wifi, bluetooth).
Some Roland keyboards (new Jupiter) have integrated bluetooth modules and iOS apps.

Yes, that would be interesting. What about reading USB drives directly or saving to SD cards. Having to carry a computer around to transfer 700 or so MB over USB1 is not that great.

I see that big advantage for wireless : it pushes all non music related human interface out of the kb.
It's less intrusive than adding memory card I/O management features to the kb.
Dunno if bluetooth's throughput is large enough ( 700Mb or more ...).
Add maybe some software limitations with Apple and ... game over ;)

IIRC, you can always use SYSEX backup files. Your midi interface to the iPad and your midi App should be able to handle them.

Of course, sysex files has nothing to do with the piano and other samples, they just store the patches.
