Controlling Slots A and B using Midi Foot Controller

Post by SteveO »

Hi,
I am looking to control the volume of a pad with an FC300 midi foot controller so that, for example, I can bring in a string beneath the piano. I am presuming this can be done by controlling either slot A or B but not sure how to do it. Is there any other way? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Steve and welcome to the forum.

You can't change the main output volume via MIDI, but you can change the volumes of the individual sections. You may even be able to control the volumes of a complete panel/slot, but I've never tested that myself, so I have no idea if that works. Since you're asking about a string sound, I'm assuming you have a Stage 2.

User Pierre has made a handy list of MIDI Control Change (CC) messages the Stage 2 supports. You can find it here: http://www.norduserforum.com/post22519. ... =cc#p22519

As you can, see the following three control volume:
  • 100 - Organ level
  • 106 - Piano level
  • 112 - Synth level
In your case you'd set up the FC300 to send CC 112 messages to the Stage 2, most likely on channel 1. Sending it to channel 1 (this is the default for the Global Channel, see the MIDI menu) should control the volume of whatever synth section is selected (and active) on your Stage 2. You can also send it directly to slot A and slot B by making sure they have their own MIDI channel configured in the MIDI menu. For example, you could give slot A channel 2 and slot B channel 3; you could then configure one pedal to send CC 112 messages on channel 2 (slot A) and another to send on channel 3 (slot B), so you could control them separately.

CC 7 is a very standard way of controlling the volume of a MIDI instrument, but on the Stage that would probably control the main output volume, which isn't possible (you can only control that by hand).

Once you've set up the pedal and the Stage 2, I think that combination would work nicely. Setting up the Stage Classic/EX should be fairly similar.

Thank you for your answer. I have just looked at the FC300 and unless I am being very dim, the cc numbers only go as far as 95. Any help would be appreciated

Grumble, it's not you, it's Roland who limited it to not send any CC above 95. Why would they do that?!

You can try sending CC 7, but whether that works... The FC300 seemed like a pretty nice pedal.

Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to help me. I have tried cc7 but it takes the volume down on both A and B slots

Hi StevO

I don't know if you're wedded to using that particular MIDI controller, but if not, a suitable expression pedal plugged directly into the Stage 2 can be easily programmed to do what you require via morphing.

You can use the MIDI controller to send expression pedal MIDI messages (CC 11) to NS2 (or modulation wheel messages, CC 1).

If it does do something (CC 7), you could assign the sections you want to control a MIDI channel in the MIDI menu (i.e. synth section A and B) and then send the CC 7 messages to those channel, instead of the Global or Slot A/B channels.

Hi everyone that took time to help me. With all your help I have worked out the solution. Assign the EXP 1 pedal of the FC300 to CC11 in order to control the Morph assign CTRLPED button via MIDI

Thanks again,

Steve
