C2D with external module.. easy?

Hi there,

I'm really weighing up between the C2D and the Hammond SK2.

I really like the the functionality of the SK2 for things other than organ.. great all rounder.

However, I really like the C2D for Hammond as it's a complete organ.

If I was to buy the C2D it would be great to use it with an external module for piano/eps etc.. when needed.

It'd be great to keep organ on top and use the lower manual for external sounds.

Is anyone doing this already? Is it a pain?
How's the velocity responding?

If I easily implement an external module for use on some gigs I will probably go the C2D

Try to check out a guy like Asterios Papastamatakis



He does it a lot. Uses the C2 and C2D as master and combines the lower manual with keyboard sounds.

What kind of music are you playing?

I use sk2 in my band and c2d for homeplaying with pedalkeys 27.

Are you using real leslie?

I'm hoping to buy a leslie at some point in the next
year.. I can't find it on google anymore but last week
I was looking at a newish Leslie that is a smaller version
of the 3300.. not the 2101, but a downsized 3300 .
Portability is key!

I've decided to try my friends C2D with an external module next week.

If it doesnt suck to play piano and eps on the bottom manual
I'll probably get the C2D.
I wanna focus on organ playing but it would
be nice to take the keyboard to a gig that requires piano also.

If it''s a 'piano gig' i will bring a weighted piano anyway.

I think the Nord is much more of a complete organ
solution.

If Nord brought out a dual manual Electro 4D with 2 sets of drawbars
that would be incredibly versatile.

You could have a slightly modified lower manual
that suited eps and pianos a little more (semi weighted)
and it would be a great all rounder.

I think even hammond players could get accustomed
to a slightly different action for their left hand stuff.
It wouldnt need to be heavily weighted.. just a hybrid
action that caters (with correct velocity curves) to eps and pianos when
selected.

I think alot of multi keyboardists would go for it
as a great all round compromise.

I use a motif rack es with my c2d.
Have ser up a multi session where i use the Bset of drawbars to control the volume of.
Double bass sound
Rhodes sound
Rhodes sound one octave up

The motifs way of handling CC is extremely flexible.
Unfortunately it is also hard to understand it since the manual is messy. But ones you get the hang of if you can do anything with it.
Second hand Motif Rack ES go for 500 euros in Sweden.

The sounds are excellent and it has huge flexibility.

A nother alternative is to find a secondhand V-machine.
This unit is very small.
Unfortunately is even more user unfriendly than the motif.
I have hade mine for 3 years. Taken it out. Got mad. Put i asway again and again.
Yesterday i did a reinstall and some of the sampletank bass sounds are usefull.
The size is perfekt.

So now it will get some more use.
Roland JV 1080 is also half size and light weigth.

I actually have the Motif ES RACK already !
That is the module I'm hoping will work well with the Nord C2D.

How do you find the velocity response of the Nord with the module?

Can you give me any more information about how you set up the ES RACK ?

I don't know anything about CC .

It would be good to even just have sounds coming from the ES RACK triggered from the top manual or bottom module.

Since I am not a piano player I can't judge the velocity curve.
It is essy to set things up on the C2d. Just select the midi channels you want to use. If you want the organ sound trigger on the high point but have velocity on the piano sound select midi local to ext. This must be done every time you start the organ since it is a special setting.
The Motif is tricker so send me your mail adress and I will explain how to do it.

Since I am not allowed to offer an opinion at home (My wife has an iron whim) I would timidly suggest that the C2D will become the next B3, that is the standard instrument. It's the only clonewheel to offer the full 5 set drawbar arrangement, until you get to the B3 Mk2 (big and expensive). Multi use keyboards come and go, modules come and go, but the C2D will be here from now on. You can always hook a module to it for other sounds. But it seems to me the C2D gives you more organ for your money, The C2D will be the one everybody wants, and recognises, like the B3 used to be.
