Release/Decay/Sustain

Post by Florian »

Hi,
i'm a new nord piano User and i like the Piano-Sounds but i'm always missing a little more Sustain when i hold the keys down. When i compare it to my acoustic piano the sustain seems really short. Now i've seen that the new nord stage pianos have the long release funktion. Why can't we have it for the nord piano? The nord piano should have all Features to create the best piano-sound possible. I would be really happy if i could get a Grand Lady-Sample Set with a longer Sustain/release-Time. In fact i would buy it if someone would create it.

Best Regards

Florian Steppke

I agree. I have a stage ex88. It seems the higher I go up the keyboard, the less sustain I have on the grande pianos. Help please.

Hi, I'm also a new Nord piano player.
I agree that upper medium zone may lack a little bit of sustain on some pianos (in f -fff range)
Nord pianos are mostly close miked, and when you use an acoustic piano on stage with close mikes, you have the same effect on the amplified sound (more attack than sustain, especially if you play ff).

I found also that it depends a lot on the sound system you use, and how the sound is treated.
If you need to to attenuate this, you can use a bit of compression.

The long release feature will not help, as it only makes the release sound a bit longer, not the sustained note sound longer.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a Long Release function incorporated into a software update that will be accessible via the Shift/Menu buttons. The Long Release feature is a new addition to Nord boards, and thus was not available when the NP88 was designed, but like I said, I wouldn't be surprised to see the NP88 receive this feature down the line.

Yes you are right. The new feature is just for the release and not for the sustain. But my upright-piano has a sutain which is nearly 2-3 times longer than the Sounds on the Nord Piano. I hope that the next sounds have longer Sustain. By the way: I think the Nord Piano sounds much better when I play with Headphones. I heared the np88 on nearly 25 different sound systems and it sounds a bit thin and metallic in the upper midrange, perhaps it has something to do with the miking technique they use to capture the sound. I recognized that the piano-sounds from the np88 are not really in phase when played in stereo.

Florian, by chance, while you were at Musikmesse did you hear Nord mention the LR feature coming down the pipe line to the NP88?
