What is the keyboard sound?

Post by Cute James »

Hello chaps,

Okay, a quick question - can anyone identify what kind of keyboard instrument the solo of this tune is played on?

The solo starts from 1:07.

Ideally I'd like to be able to recreate this sound with my Electro, so sample recommendations would also be appreciated!

Cheers,
James

My first guess would be an RMI Electra-PIano, though there were a number of other electronic pianos that could sound kind of similar (i.e. Univox, Crumar, Elka). The Nord Sample LIbrary has a whole bunch of "RMI Electra 368x" sounds.

shark, thanks, I but I don't think it sounds a great deal like a harpsichord...

anotherscott, cool, thanks for the tip...I'll have to give those RMI Electra sounds a try!

Cheers,
James

EDIT: Great, the RMI Electra is pretty close! I haven't tried it on my Nord yet, but the demo clip on the Nord Sample Library page sounds pretty spot on! ;)

The Keyboard Detective, signing in... ;)

Since Gardner was a New Orleans musician and the RMI features on a large amount of late-60s /early-70s material from that city (think Dr John or Allen Toussaint) I would guess that an RMI Electra-Piano is indeed what's being used. Fantastic bit of funk-blues.

Thanks for the background history Simon!

By the way, talking of New Orleans, do you watch 'Treme'?

I'd also vote for an RMI on harpsi setting.
