iPad Air 13“ M4 Audio/Midi interface

Post by Schorsch »

Hi,

I’m using a combination of my Nord Stage 3 Compact and an Uhl X4V Hammond clone (HX3 organ engine) on stage, playing piano and synth sounds from the Nord and organ sounds from the Uhl, with the Nord being the lower organ manual on some songs and being connected to the Uhl via MIDI.

In addition I am using an iPad Air 132 (M4), the current Model, with BandHelper for my leadsheets and lyrics.

I now need to connect the iPad via MIDI to both the Nord and the Uhl for switching programs from BandHelper, but also to play some virtual instruments on the iPad from the keyboard of the Nord Stage 3.

This means that I must connect the Nord MIDI out to both the iPad and the Uhl as well as MIDI out from the iPad to both of them, with the iPad and the Uhl being on different MIDI channels, and also need the audio from the iPad to go into my mixer.

Can anyone recommend any devices needed to achieve this, like audio/midi interfaces for the iPad, and how to connect all?

Thanks, Schorsch
Regards Schorsch

It might be overkill, but the Radial Key Largo does a great job here. USB to the iPad for audio and MIDI, MIDI Din in and out of Nord. Works perfectly. Mix the Nord volume with the iPad on the mixer and have send to FoH as balanced DI feed. Avoiding the risk of destroying an iPad with Phantom power.

Hey,

the Key Largo is part of my rig but I haven’t even thought about that, thanks for pointing me in that direction !

Just missing the connection from the Nord Midi Out to the Uhl Clone’s Midi In, I guess I would need a small Midi splitter/through box for getting this

Does someone know if the Key Largo provides Power over MIDI to power a MIDI through box, and does the Key Largo support a USB connection to iOS devices?

Key Largo is not a USB host device. It does not supply power to any other USB devices.

Thanks!

Powering an external MiDI device like the Midi Solutions Through box is less an issue though, more import is to understand if the iPad Air M4 can transmit both Audio and MIDI via it’s USB C port to the Key Largo

In any case I believe the Key Largo has standard current on the MIDI OUT port, so enough to power your Thru Box.

Back to your initial question, why don't you use USB MIDI to connect the keyboards to the iPad instead (of course via a usb-c Hub) and then just add a USB Audio card of your choice (maybe you already own one), leaving MIDI DIN just for the connection between the two keyboars?
