Wanted: Solo violin and cello programs with pure tone samples and vibrato only with mod wheel or aftertouch
Hello,
I have a Stage 2EX and I apologize in advance if I am overlooking something, but I am looking for a solo violin and solo cello program where vibrato is controlled from the mod wheel or with aftertouch. All the samples I have found so far either are recorded with vibrato (possibly delayed but still there). I have had other older synths with that type of program, so I feel a bit puzzled why there aren't many available.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a program library for sale with these types of programs, or have one of each to share as a starting point for me?
Thank you in advance!

Have you tried with the Mellotron or Chamberlin solo violin/cello samples?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, and yes, I looked through all of the Mellotron and Chamberlink solo violin and cello samples in the Nord sample library, and all the ones I checked had vibrato, either starting directly or after a delay, so not what I want.

I haven't tested it, but what if you load a normal straight string sample and use the modulation in the synth section assigned to mod wheel? It may not sound like "string vibrato" though it is one thing to try.

That would work of course, even if it won't be so natural (normally vibrato on real strings is not at a fixed rate, it starts slow then accelerates) but the OP problem is exactiy to find a that "straight string sample" of violin/cello sample, with no added vibrato in the waveform itself. To me it seems some Mello/Chamberlin samples have no vibrato, at least listening their the demo tracks on Nord website.ericL wrote: 18 Apr 2026, 00:03 I haven't tested it, but what if you load a normal straight string sample and use the modulation in the synth section assigned to mod wheel? Otherwise the alternative is to build your own .nsmp3 with Nord Sample Editor, by finding some .wav sampleset of violin (e.g. extracting from soundfont like the Sonatina orchestra) or resampling a VST violin/cello library of OP taste

Re: Wanted: Solo violin and cello programs with pure tone samples and vibrato only with mod wheel or aftertouch
Thanks for the ideas, and yeah, I done some searching in available sample libraries external to the Nord Sample library, and so far haven't found a violin and cello samples that are pure samples without vibrato (either on directly or delayed).
I have thought about creating a violin and cello samples without vibrato myself, but to be honest, was hoping that was a last resort, given my lack of skills and the time it will take. I feel a but shocked that this hasn't been solved before, as in my opinion,as makes a violin or cello solo program much more realistic and expressive if the keyboard player can apply the vibrato.
One other thought so far is if it is possible with the wavetable sample portion of the Nord Stage, though I assume the samples there are more limited in quality.
Thanks again!

Just to make sure we are referring to the same Mellotron/Chamberlin samples, I listened again to "Solo Violin Chamberlin UU", "Solo Violin Mellotron M300", and "Solo Cello Mellotron M400", and I hear vibrato on all of them. IF you referring to different samples please specify which you think don't have vibrato recorded in the sample. Thanks.

I was referring mainly to the Solo Violin Chamberlin UU (because there is also a Vibrato Violin Chamberlin UU)

Re: Wanted: Solo violin and cello programs with pure tone samples and vibrato only with mod wheel or aftertouch
It's really hard to get a natural sounding string vibrato on a synth, unless perhaps you're using a ribbon controller.
That's why so many samples have pre-recorded vibrato.

I think I have gear issues ....

Re: Wanted: Solo violin and cello programs with pure tone samples and vibrato only with mod wheel or aftertouch
Hi,
I guess I am old school or something, but there is no point to have vibrato when you don't want it. I goal as a keyboard player has been to study an instrument I am trying to mimic, and play like it. So, in the case of vibrato for solo and cello, it is something applied as form of expression. It seems like some people that responded are hung up the vibrato doesn't sound natural, but in my opinion, it is pointless to have vibrato on solo violin or cello all the time, as that isn't natural, or how a real soloist plays.
The type of program was standard in synths in the old days; i.e., 80's-90's are the very least, so it puzzling that programs don't exist for Nord. It is only comforting so far that I haven't overlooked the obvious program.
