Nord Stage 4 Backup file is not of required type
Hi there,
I'm trying to restore from a backup file I created. I get the error message 'file is not of the required type'.
I assume this was because I renamed the file and didn't include the ".ns4b" file identification. But after reinserting this it still gives the same error message.
Can someone help?
Thanks!

Are you sure that is a NS4 backup? In any case, rename it as .zip and unzip it, you should see its content this way and you can restore manually what you need.

Yeah, I’m having this exact same problem! Turning it into a zip file didn’t seem to help. Really weird….

What did you do exactly after you renamed the file name extension to “.zip”?Ciaran J wrote: 28 Oct 2025, 17:47 Yeah, I’m having this exact same problem! Turning it into a zip file didn’t seem to help. Really weird….

I’ve sorted this now, turns out I was using an old version of the Sound Manager, which obvs isn’t compatible with the Stage 4. I thought it’d backed it up successfully, as it had claimed, but obviously had not! You live and learn….

Re: Nord Stage 4 Backup file is not of required type
I work in IT. Our team has to regularly check that the backups of our files work. This helps avoid any problems with corruption and incorrect versions when it is required. It is standard good practice.
So I occasionally use the Sound Manager to recover a backup that I've just made to my NS4. Usually I do this when there's a firmware update or software update. Or if I'm making big changes to programs and samples.
I'd recommend doing this to everyone - for peace of mind!
