Piano 5 Midi Out Acting Weird

Post by jurdenf »

My P5 is behaving oddly. I have a set up using the P5 as a controller for Prophet Rev2 but the P5 won't pass thru midi messages from my MC6 controller. The picture below outlines the issue in better detail. Any thoughts?

Hi, it is normal, NP5 does not support any MIDI Merge/Thru functionality between its MIDI IN and OUT (actually no MIDI device does it, as per MIDI standard definition of IN/OUT, unless they implement a Soft THRU in firmware)

You need a MIDI Merge box between the NP5 and the Prophet and use it to merge data from NP5+MC6 (using another output of the THRU box you already have in front of it)

there is no MIDI through on the P5.

Yes the P5 sends MIDI to the Rev2 when you play on it, its supposed to do that, but it will not pass MIDI from the In to the Out (MIDI through)

You will need to add a MIDI splitter before the P5 and send MIDI directly to the Rev2.

You could also use a more capable MIDI box instead of your MIDI through box, that would allow you to setup up Multiple Routes for the MIDI traffic.

I'm not 100% sure but believe something like this iConnectivity box would let you connect all of your MIDI devices to the MIO and then configure routing from the various inputs to the various outputs independently.

Thanks for the clarification folks. I understand now the limitations.

What's really weird is that this set up *was* working just fine. I am not kidding. For years, I've had this set up where I could send PC from MC6 to Nord to Rev2 and pedalboard. Call up presets on the Rev2, and on the pedalboard, use P5 and keys. It worked just fine. Swear to god! Then, no more. Weird!

In the System Menu, under midi options, page 3, the Nord allows me to specify Midi CC Send & Receive as well as PC Send & Receive. Does seem to imply that the P5 *should* Send and Receive Midi PC, right? I know it doesn't work, but what do those settings control when I select "Send"?

"Send" means that if you manually select a Program on the NP5 (or modify a parameter associated to a MIDI CC) it will also transmit the related PC via MIDi, but this applies only to actions made directly on the NP5.
