transpose woes with external synth as controller

Post by Stokely »

Well, my "nice to have" is getting a bit complicated, and I'm hoping someone has a magic solution. One that doesn't involve another device (like an ipad with aum or some app).

I got a new, pretty simple synth to pair with my NS3c. It's taking the place of a Fantom, which is overkill for my gigs and I dislike programming on it. This synth (Behringer ubxa) does it's thing, but for certain songs I'd like to have it trigger sounds from the Nord.

Dual KB works as it should, I have the Panel B piano playing from the synth. The problem is transposition.

My band tunes down a half step, and rather than play everything a half step down---which would be confusing in conversations and would suck as a player!--any keyboard I've ever used including the NS3 I just transpose down a half step. Problem is, the new synth ALSO will be tuned down, and unfortunately it doesn't just transpose the sound engine, it affects the midi out. So the piano playing from panel B is now transposed a full step down :) I tried the Transpose button (+1) on the NS3 (up above the main screen), and the problem there is now the sound from panel A is too high!

What I really need is a way to transpose just the piano on panel B up a half step (to counter-act the incoming midi + global nord transpsoe which ends up being a full semitone down)...don't see any such thing.

And none of this is to suggest the NS3 is lacking, I figured this would be an issue when I first considered it. I was hoping the synth might have an option to NOT send a transposed note out, but I don't see that either. I don't even see a per-patch option on the synth to transpose-- If it had one, I'd just turn off its global transposition and problem solved.

Anyway, hope this all makes sense. I can certainly do without this, it's a nice to have as I mentioned.

Hah, think I may have a workaround.

There is a way to save transpose per patch on the synth, like the global transpose it affects both the internal sound and midi out note.

That works in my favor: my "dummy patch" on the synth--which will have no sound of it's own--I just transposed back up a half step and saved it. This patch transpose (+1) works with the synth global transpose (-1) and the NS3 global transpose (-1) to get me where I need to be, at -1 :D

This hurts my brain a bit, but it works. It's a change to a single patch on one keyboard, so in that sense I like it. Better still, it's saved and requires no per-gig setup or on the fly changes. I've had some keyboards where I relied on transposing after powering up, and if you lose power and forget and hit a chord...well, you get experimental jazz :D
