How can I get this sound with a Nord Piano 6?

Everything about Nord keyboards in general; which one to choose, the sound manager, sample editor, and general discussion about the sample and piano libraries.

How can I get this sound with a Nord Piano 6?

Post by fabeck01 »

Dear Forum Members,

I am about to buy a Nord Piano 6 to get back into piano playing.

Before I commit to the purchase, I'm wondering if I could also get it to play a sound, which, for years, I cannot get out of my head. You can hear it during the first minute of this Kurzweil Artis demonstration from 2014:

Can I get this sound (or extremely close) from a Nord Piano 6 and how I would go about it specifically (I am aware that the Nord Piano 6 neither has a mod wheel nor pitch bend)? Is this possible or is this something that would require a Nord Stage for its synth section (or something else)? In that case, since I already own a Nord Lead A1, could I get this sound from the Lead A1 in conjunction with the Piano?

Thanks for any help, which is greatly appreciated!

Video doesn't work for me with that link, reposting

In NP6 you have a Sample Synth so as far as you can sample that sound using Nord Sohnd Editor and load the result in your NP6 you could, but of course it is not the same as having a proper synth generating it, where you can use controllers (velocity, MW, other) to alter it in real time.

About A1, in theory it is better positioned to generate that type of sounds, but not knowing how that Kurzweil sound is done (VA, FM, other..? If it uses samples then clearly A1 can't) it is hard to replicate it. Have you tried, anyway?

Thanks, maxpiano, for your reply and for reposting the link. I have tried to approximate the sound on the A1 but wasn't successful (so far). I guess I'll have to continue trying... Sampling of the Kurzweil Artis sound isn't an option for me as I don't have access to that instrument. Therefore, unfortunately, I also don't know how it's created on the Kurzweil.

I'm not very familiar with programming synth sounds. But to my ears, reproducing that sound on a Piano 6 would involve two different synth engines as there is a part of the sound with a relatively short attack and one that comes in over time. Either you have a filter curve available or you may need two slots.
Stage-3-C (Rev.B 2.1) - Kawai VPC1 / Viscount Legend 70s / Yamaha CP33 - Hall of Fame & NeoVent2 - Behringer Flow-8 - K&M stands 18820+18811 / 18953+18952 - Samsung Tab S5e, MobileSheetsPro & AirTurn Duo200 - QSC K8.2s / Fischer InEars

That is a very valid suggestion for reproducing it on the A1, but Nord Piano Synth section is just a sample playback with some minimal envelope control, so you cannot "synthesize" much with it, otoh no need for 2 slots if you have a good full lenght samples set of the sound you need.

Thank you all for your replies so far. I will have to try to get hold of a Kurzweil Artis and play with the sound to better understand what is going on. Anyway, if anyone knows how the sound/program is called on the Kurzweil (maybe it also exists on other, more modern Kurzweil keyboards?), please do let me know.

Well, that's a synth part you posted, not a piano part. Have you considered a soft synth in your rig?
I think I have gear issues ....
