Help: Nord Piano NP 2 (HA88) Stuck on Screen With Black Blocks/Squares

Hi there, my Nord Piano 2 (HA88) suddenly stopped booting/turning on.

When I power it on:
  • The panel lights flash briefly.
  • The screen displays only a top row of small black blocks/squares (see images).
  • The panel is unresponsive (no other lights are on).
  • Mac and Windows computers recognise the device via USB.
What I’ve tried:
  • Nord Sound Manager (NSM) v9.14 and older versions detect the device but display: “The OS version of the connected Nord Piano 2 is not supported.”
  • Installing OS version 1.22, which is also the latest available online.
  • Tried older NSM versions (v7.84) — same result: “The OS version of the connected Nord Piano 2 is not supported.”
  • Attempted OS update using Nord OS Updater Tool for latest OS version from Nord website and the older OS versions, the tool starts and progresses but gets stuck at “Waiting for reboot to complete.”
  • Tried entering Update Mode (Shift + Store + power on) — same result.
  • I opened up the keyboard and all electrical components look ok, no dark/burned spots or anything looking weird. I tried to push in all the connectors to seat them firmly.
Also:
I can’t do a factory restore in NSM — all menu options are greyed out because of the OS version notice.

Hoping it’s not hardware-related, but I’ll escalate to a service center if needed. I live in Munich/Germany so if you have had the same issue repaired before, what price range am I looking at?

Any help or leads would be really appreciated! :sad:

Always consider software prompts to be misleading: If NSM won't find any OS at all, it might lead to the same error prompt, as it's not a known version.

There is a chance that it's only the OS version corrupted - reinstalling any version may help (you don't need NSM for that). If not, it may be a hardware failure - in that case, you should contact the national distributor for help.

Hi, not sure I quite get what you’re saying. NSM recognises the keyboard but just says it’s incompatible. I can’t actually tell if the v1.22 is a fluke or not because I can’t use any of it to restore it back to the factory version. Nord only has version 9.x online.

If I can get a version above 7.6 or the OS version 1.X, I could try to factory reset it but since all the options are greyed out, I can’t do anything. Hence the post. :)

In my eyes, you need to forget about NSM. Whether 7.x or 9.x. Just leave it away. And you already tried to install OS v.1.22 outside of NSM - see image 5.

You can't boot your Piano 2. So in one way or another, the OS or the content need to be affected - either only a singular data corruption or a lasting hardware problem. The only thing you can do is to try to re-install the OS (firmware) by downloading the DMG bundle, extract it and run it; but that's what you already did - I'm not familiar with MacOS, so I didn't see it directly.

I don't see anything you still could do on your own. As the board is recognized, the USB cable shouldn't be the issue. Unfortunately, it's quite likely that you need hardware support.

Somebody with a different conclusion here?
