[Electro 6] - best option to output audio into single keyboard amplifier

Post by Rohan92 »

Hi everyone,
I have a nord electro 6D and a keyboard amplifier roland kc-80 three channels. Which is the best option to connect my nord electro that has a stereo output to this amplifier?
I don’t know if connecting it through phones output of nord may damage the keyboard or the amplifier.

Thanks in advance :keyboard2:

For years I have connected both L and R channels of mixer output to two channels of my powered speaker. You can do the same thing. I wouldn't use the headphone output for this, personally.

Thank you for your answer. So your suggestion is to connect left and right channel of nord keyboard to two separated channel of the roland kc-80?

Hi an welcome to NUF :-)

In general those keyboard amps don't work well with Nords, particularly with Piano Section stereo samples, but if I had to use one I would go for a mono link and connect only the L (or R) channel to a single channel of the KC (like they used to do with Fender Rhodes, which was mono, I mean)

That ensures you will get both right and left signals from your keyboard, although no stereo separation. Max is right, though, the Roland keyboard amps just don't work well for acoustic piano sounds. EPs, organ, and synth should be much more usable.

If the amp is mono, never use all two Nord outputs, as the summed signal always sounds bad due to phase cancellations etc... Instead, always use only one mono output. I myself (and some others too...) always use the right output, as the piano samples sound better here (more brilliant). And I also specifically don't use the mono button. I've tried it out a lot live and all the sound engineers have confirmed that it sounds best this way.

I have never experienced this type of phase cancellation, interesting. Also, neither my Stage 3 or Wave 2 have mono outputs, my KL-8 mixer does have the option of summing its outputs to mono, but I only use this for FOH-

Yes, this is a well-known phenomenon, especially with stereo piano samples, which the Nord grand pianos and uprights all are. Incidentally, the electric pianos are all sampled mono, so it doesn't matter.

Hi, the Electro 6 has a MONO function (shift + KBD TOUCH) which does a great job on the FX as well.

Two inputs into an amp with two inputs will be just fine, as there's usually a small mixer embedded there. A backwards wired cable will invert phase and almost completely cancel your sound. You won't know which one is backwards until you try to use both of them!

I prefer mono for small, intimate venues (think duo/trio).
I think I have gear issues ....

No, even if the amp has two separately adjustable inputs: If its sound output is not stereo, but mono, then it will sum the two channels at the output to one channel and this is exactly what usually does not sound good with stereo piano samples. In such a case, it is always better.
