RE: Nord Wave 3?

Post by monsterjazzlicks »

Hi folks,

Yesterday I searched for an answer to this specific question. The closest I got to where discussions by musicians (circa 6 years ago) stating that Nord were ditching the Wave series after the very first edition - which is obviously incorrect because Nord produced the Wav 2!

And so I ask, please: do we have a Wave 3 in the pipeline...?

Many thanks in advance.

Best,

Paul David Seaman

As the Wave 2 is one of the rather newer models, it’s highly unlikely that there will be a Wave 3 soon.
The next update will probably be an Electro 7 or (I really hope so) a new Nord Lead.

Thanks very much indeed. I believe the Wave 2 was released in 2020? Do you not think that four years is an acceptable period to justify a supersede model, please?

I'm happy with my Electro 6 and don't think I would ever upgrade.

as can be seen from the Nord Keyboard Timeline , Clavia does regular upgrades only of its main lines of products, that are the stage pianos (Electro, Stage and Piano). These were always updated more or less every 3 years, at least until covid, wars, inflation etc disrupted everything in the last few years. Considering that the Electro 6 is now way behind schedule, it's an easy guess that we'll see an Electro 7 rather soon.

The other lines have much longer product cycles, and it doesn't look like there is a regular upgrade plan: they simply stay in production as long as they sell, and then they are replaced by a new version or just discontinued.
So I agree that a new Wave is probably not coming for a good while, if ever. After all, the Wave 2 arrived 13 years after the original...and in between there were 8 years without any Wave at all in Nord's portfolio.
If you think the Wave 2 suits your needs, you better get one now. If you need something different, it's better to look for other brands... or be prepared to wait a looooong time. ;)

Hi Spider,

Many thanks for your help here. I appreciate that.

Well, I won't have the funds for a Nord Wave until around 18 months or so, which is why I was asking if they are likely to be discontinued - as some people speculate. I would be surprised if it was indeed dropped because it appears to be an excellent keyboard used proudly by many professionals?

I was surprised to learn of the 13 year hiatus between the Wave 1 and 2!

Best,

Paul

This will probably be many years away. As others have said, a new Electro is the most logical product to be released. Synthesizers are not really Nord's core product anymore.

Hi again tsss27.

Cheers for you responses again!

Oh, OK; I see, thanks.

I do really like the Synth engine on my Electro 6, but I was looking for something a bit more raunchy for in the future...

Best,

Paul

You will certainly get much more control with a Wave over an Electro in the synth department. On the Electro, the sample player is basically just an afterthought, for layering a pad or synth sample with a piano for example. You can't really do much sound design and there is no real synthesis (analog modeling or FM.)

Cheers tsss27,

Yup, I see your accurate observations, thanks.

For all its merits, I find the Electro to be a fantastic all-rounder. I often feel like I have three keyboards at my fingertips, if you know what I mean. There are some limitations, but I was ecstatic about the fact Nord increased the Piano engine size to 1GB. Before I had a 88 Stage Classic flaunting an inadequate 124MB!
