NSMP v2 format with Nord Sample Editor

Everything about Nord keyboards in general; which one to choose, the sound manager, sample editor, and general discussion about the sample and piano libraries.

NSMP v2 format with Nord Sample Editor

Post by WannitBBBad »

For the last several years I have been posting NSMP files to the Forum even though I have a Stage 3 that uses NSMP3 samples. The approach was simply to allow a wider range of Nord users to use my work since Nord Sound Manager would also convert them to NSMP3 format for applicable keyboards. That approach worked fine as well for Piano 5 owners when Nord Sound Manager would convert them to NSMP4 format, however that same conversion capability has not ever worked for Stage 4 owners for NSMP files created using Nord Sample Editor (saves in NSMP v2 format). With the introduction of NSM v7.82, the conversion capability got broken for Piano 5 owners as well.

IMO Nord needs to deliver what it claims to deliver - the capability to convert user-created NSMP and NSMP3 files to NSMP4 format, however Nord hasn't fixed this problem for over a year. It's a problem for not only for P5 and NS4 owners, but also users who can only use NSMP files if folks start to abandon posting in the older format. The problem just doesn't seem to be getting the attention it should. To be honest, it's really not my problem and it may not be yours either - yet.

Update: Just bought a Stage 4 - now it's my problem too!

I think it gets down to Nord's intent with Sound Manager, which we can only guess at.

If they intend to add forward conversion of older samples to NSM, then -- yeah -- stick with the most widely usable sample format, and let people upconvert.

However, if Nord doesn't intend to add this functionality to NSM ever, then you've got a hard choice. There are valid business reasons to go either way, so hazarding a guess is hard.

Would it be a significant effort to create both .nsmp and .nsmp3 samples, which would serve all possible instruments then? If the answer is “yes” I would suggest to go in with just .nsmp3, but if it’s doable it would be great for all to provide both

Ideally if you could post both types, you would be helping everybody!
It is not "double to hassle", but just saving in both formats, no?

And thank you for all your contributions!

I'm about to generate a complete collection of a classic keyboard. Stay tuned !
I'll generate both NSMP and NSMP3 versions as it's just an extra step in the process creation.
I would be interested to understand apart from the compatibilty issue already discussed, what is the difference between an NSMP3 created in NSE and NSMP3 converted in NSM from a NSMP created in NSE ?

I don't think there is a difference, the output is the same as far as I remember (don't do any .nsmp anymore since I sold my NS2EX a couple of years ago)

If I remember well, the difference is that in .nsmp3 you can incorporate some suggested parameters for Filter and Envelope also for Nord Stage (and not just Nord Electros, as in the original .nsmp) and v3 should manage sample Categories which original .nsmp didn't (always iirc)

Yes, I'd probably end up posting both as I'd never leave users stranded. I can't believe that Nord hasn't fixed the problem since the introduction of the Stage 4. Conversion used to work fine for the Piano 5, so what did they break? Similar to the last few versions of NSM, the information page for NSM v9 states:
"Now possible to convert any user created sample (.nsmp, .nsmp3) for use in Nord Piano 5 and Nord Stage 4".

I'm curious as well. I've even noticed a slight size difference between a NSMP3 file created with NSE and the same file after uploading it back from my Stage 3.

Correct, but his question, as far as I understood it, was if there is a difference in the .nsmp3 sample when creating a .nsmp3 sample from NSE directly compared to having it created as .nsmp in NSE and then convert this into .nsmp3 using NSM
