Pedal noise without Triple Pedal

Hello Nord forum users,

After having browsed this forum as a guest user for all kinds of information over the past couple of years, I now have registered, as I have something to share.

What?
I have made an app that allows the triggering of dynamic pedal noises with a simple switch-type sustain pedal (so a binary switch, non-continuous pedal). That means you do not require a separate and expensive Triple Pedal unit anymore for that added bit of piano realism. I have done this by reverse-engineering the pedal noise triggering algorithm used in the Nord Piano 88.

* Because the Piano 5 is compatible, it can be assumed that the Piano 2, 3 and 4, and even the Grand models are also compatible.

Do I need anything to make it work?
Not so much, and probably you have everything at your disposal already. You need:

• your Nord
• a switch-type sustain pedal
• an Android or iOS smartphone or tablet/iPad capable of USB-OTG (On The Go)
• a USB-cable connecting the USB-To-Host on the back of your Nord (the square-ish connector) to the USB-port on your smartphone/tablet (for iOS: a Lightning to USB camera adapter cable)

Testers wanted
The app has been tested with my own first generation Nord Piano 88 and I need to verify that the pedal noise algorithm of the Piano 88 is still the one used in more recent instruments. I'm expecting the same algorithm to be present in all but (perhaps) the Stage 4, which might have a changed algorithm due to the introduction of the Triple Pedal 2.

I'd like to ask for testers who are willing to test it on the other Nord instruments that are yet to be tested (see the table above).

For this, I will be handing out app promotion codes on a first-come-first-served basis with which you can install the app completely free of charge, and use it without any time or feature restrictions. It will be one code per listed instrument below.

How can I join?
Post a message in this topic indicating which (untested) Nord you can test (important: verify the OS version!) and which type of pedal you are using (if known: brand and model). You will then receive a promotion code via private message.

To redeem the promotion code, do the following.

Android

• Open the Google Play app
• At the top right, tap the profile icon
• Tap Payments & subscriptions and then Redeem gift code
• Enter the code

iOS

• Open the App Store on your iOS device
• Tap your profile avatar on the top right
• Choose “Redeem Gift Card or Code”; if you don’t see this, sign in with your Apple ID
• Choose “Enter Code Manually”
• Follow the instructions

And then?
Install the app and be the first to test it on your Nord model!

What I want to know is whether you can connect to your Nord instrument and whether the app allows you to trigger dynamic pedal noises by pressing a switch-type sustain pedal.
If it works: great! Post a message here, then I will update the table above so that everybody is informed.
If it doesn't work: that's a pity. I would like to know what the problem is. If the MIDI connections are all made properly, I might need to add a new pedal noise algorithm to support that particular instrument.

Great! I have ported the app to iOS and will test this week. If everything works fine on my iPhone and iPad, I'll submit the app to the App Store. My previous experience is that Apple is quite slow in processing and accepting new apps, so I guess it will take another two weeks or so from now. I'll let you know.

Testing the Stage 4 will be interesting, as it uses a new sustain/triple pedal and (therefore?) possibly a new algorithm.
