Electro 6D 61 for flight / hand luggage

Post by hertelend »

Advice Electro 6D for air travel
I'm playing a few gigs next year with a band for which I'm traveling by plane.
As my NordStage2 is not practical for transport, I'm looking into buying an Electro 6D 61. Now my questions:
Is the Electro 6D 61 equal in terms of capability to the Stage2 just that it is smaller / Waterfall keys etc... or are there other limitations that I don't currently see.
I used to have an Electro3 earlier - but I sold it because it was unable to layer the sounds. This is now possible with the 6D.
Do you know of any other alternatives for a keyboard suitable for flying?
I'm actually very satisfied with my Nord Stage and would not like to change systems.

Thanks
Uli

I am in same situation. I have flown and driven with my old Hammond SK1 61, and just chose the Electro 6D 61 to replace my trusty SK1 since it is nearly exactly same dimensions and fits same flight case. It's taking some getting used to the difference in sound of the B3 engines. I still prefer the SK1 for this. But the pianos are all superior on the Nord, and the added synth samples are just what was needed on some cover songs. The SK1 had a hard time with things like flute, horns and strings. I am settled on only one 61 key axe but the Electro's B3 just isn't quite as rich as the Hammonds. I am going to travel with the Nord, so there we are....

I also have a Stage 2 76 HA and a 6D 61.
I fly around europe quite often and only take the 6D 61 in a flight case.
Total weight is just under 20kg which is fine with most airlines that i've used.
I fly from and back to the UK. It does have to be payed for and has to be checked in as oversize baggage.
I have a full aluminium flight case and a Gator ATA 49 case.

There are quite a lot of differences between the Stage 2 and the 6D. But there are a lot of area's that are the same.
It will depend on exactly how you use your Stage 2 and how much you need from the synth sections.
Organs are pretty much the same. Rotary is better on the 6D. Piano are pretty much the same. The sample section on the 6D is great but is not as good as the 2 synths at a time with the stage 2. You can layer and split the sounds on the 6D. But only one of each section. And only one split.

I can make do with just the 6D quite easily. I sometimes ask on a rider for a weighted action midi piano and just midi it to the 6D as a bottom keyboard for nord piano layer only. But to be honest its often more trouble than its worth, the 61 semi action is ok for piano in a band set up.

I had a couple of Stage 2 synth sounds that used 2 different sounds split arcoss the keyboard that I really wanted to use on the 6D, So i sampled them as they play on the Stage 2 and just load that sample in to the 6D, tweak it a bit, eq and reverb and It's surprizingly good and works well for me.
I hope this helps. Norm
