Playing NE5 from Piano 5 with splits

Post by Structo »

Hi, I have a Piano 5 and an Electro 5. I want to play Electro organ from the Piano 5 with my left hand using a split so I can play pianos on the Piano 5 right side. I'm able to play the E5 from the P5 but don't want to hear the E5 above the split point.
I've studied both manuals and am still confused. Thanks for any tips for this.

The Piano 5 doesn't control MIDI per layer - there's only a global MIDI channel. So no way to have a split point act on the sending part of the MIDI note commands.

The Electro 5 is much more flexible with MIDI. But this won't help anything in your case. As sending MIDI note commands into a layer (upper/lower) of the NE5, the full range of incoming notes should be processed: The engine won't probably observe any limitation - neither split points nor the key range of the processing instrument (which usually is great as you should be able to play a 88 keys range on any Electro).

The only thing you can do is connecting a special MIDI processor in between. But I don't see an easy way to make it react on a split point from the NP5 depending on the program set. That way, you'd have to set programs on the NP5, the NE5 and a MIDI processor (if this is even possible without using MIDI commands because the NP5 wouldn't be able to send commands for the processor on another channel).

I'm not a MIDI pro, but that's what I'd expect.

Depending on what you are trying to accomplish you may not need the Electro at all. Several kind members here have offered some good quality organ samples for the Sample Synth section. No real drawbar or rotary control, but they work well depending on the use case.

If you want to comp chords, load in one of the organ samples that sound close to what you want and set the appropriate octave. Connect a controller pedal to manage the volume. Split the P5 keyboard to play the samples on the left and piano on the right.

You can probably do something similar if you want to use organ bass. Just pick a simple organ registration sample (or create your own using the Nord Sample Editor) and follow the steps above.

Again, it depends on what your end result is. Just offering a different way to approach a solution.

Thanks for the replies. When playing LH bass in a trio I tend to prefer the sound of organ bass to the P5 bass sounds, though those bass sound aren't bad. And playing the upper keyboard (E5) a lot can be hard on my shoulders after a while. I like the idea of finding more organ bass sounds for the lower (P5) keyboard.

Using some organ samples on the NP5 synth section is a good solution, you can find quite a number of them on nordusersounds.com; then I have a maybe a dumb question: why don't you play the bass directly on the NE5 instead (splitting it in case you need it also for another sound)?

I have done that some but doing it a lot can be hard on my shoulders. I like having the 2 boards but am not crazy about playing 2nd tier.

Another option.
Sample the E5 organ and use the samples in the P5.
