Nord Lead 1 Rack Factory Reset

Post by Youthpose »

Apologies if this has been answered before or if this isn't the appropriate place to ask.
I have a Nord Lead 1 Rack and I'm trying to reset the patches to the factory patches, essentially doing a factory reset on the device.
From my understanding, all user presets are saves in program 1 on patches 1-40 and while the machine itself doesn't have a factory reset, you can return the patches to their default state using sysex messages as well as a third party program.
Nord has user files uploaded to the website for this, but it's all midi files. It is also divided up into various folders which confuse me.
Could anyone help clear this up?

Search for the "internal.mid" file in the Nord Lead Factory Banks.zip then, as written on Nord website in the Nord Lead Library page https://www.nordkeyboards.com/sound-lib ... ory-sounds

The Raw SysEx files can be transmitted to the instrument using a MIDI Dump Utility or librarian software such as the SysEx Librarian by Snoize on the Mac platform or MIDI-OX for Windows users, while most commercial sequencer/DAW software will accept and play the SMF format.

so in case of .mid ("SMF format") you can "play" those midifiles to the Nord Lead from a DAW, loading them as MIDI track configured to send to the MIDI OUT of your soundcard/MIDI interface, which you will have connected to MIDI IN of the Nord Lead.Note: Snoize SysexLibrarian on the Mac should be able to use both .syx and .mid

PS: similar thread, even if for NL2x, here nord-lead-rack-forum-f12/nl-2-x-sysex-d ... 23997.html

Thank you for a detailed response. So just to be sure I understand this correctly, you can essentially play that midi to the Nord and that midi file will overwrite all user saved patches to the factory programmed ones, correct?
This would only require a DAW and not a third party program such as SysEx.

Correct, just ensure the DAW is not filtering/excluding the sysex data out of the .mid (normally it shouldn't, but some DAWs may have settings related to this)

Once I play the MIDI files into the hardware, do I have to store via the Nord or do the messages overwrite and save as needed/intended?

If you send an entire Bank it should overwrite the existing the need to save, check the NL the manual at page 71 https://www.nordkeyboards.com/sites/def ... %202.x.pdf

Is their any conversation that needs to happen with that .mid file? I tried to drop it into Ableton with no luck.
I also tried to send via Midi-Ox with no change to the patches. I have the MIDI in/out configured correctly and it'll send the data but no change occurs on the Nord and the presets I made myself are still there.

To further specify, Ableton literally won't let me import the .mid file into the DAW to then be able to play it out to the Nord via Midi In/Out.
