Leslie Studio 12 2023

Post by stopmakingsense »

Couldn't wait to get the Leslie Studio 12 when they went back into production this Spring. So I did. Only had it for a little over a day.
I love it already. Didn't have an opportunity to play test it, but with Cliff at Hammond Central's help, I took the leap of faith.

I've hooked my Nord Stage into a great 122 a few times, and that of course was "the" sound. I had to dial back the bass on that bad boy.
This Studio 12 has a really great sound to it. Better then the KBR3D I used to have, and entering the territory of the 122. Doesn't need a big Pre-amp box and Cable, it's 85 lbs and relatively compact.

If I needed to kick bass without another speaker, I'm guessing I'd have enough, by splitting the Nord and boosting bass on everything. I did some dialing with just a 1/4 setting on the Leslie gain and using the Nord's EQ section's overdrive, adjusted from the Mod wheel. I prefer the Nord's Overdrive to the Leslie's, plus it's at my finger tips. Maybe has to do with what tubes were available, with Russian tubes supply shut off. (update: that first day I had plugged into the the high gain input. The low gain input is a better match with the Nord).

I will probably still usually just use the onboard rotary effect, when I'm gigging, as I am not built to lug heavy gear. I've got Stage Organ Sounds dialed in so the laymen in the audience wouldn't probably notice they were missing anything. By the time you mic up a leslie and go through the PA , I'm figuring you'd lose a lot of that beautiful quality of moving air. So it's my guilty pleasure at home. I would recommend it.

Update: Now that I've had it a bit, you can dial in quite a bit of Bass. Also, using the low gain input and the overdrive channel, with the gain about half way up warms the tone nicely, without distorting. I still use the Nord's overdrive knob to dial in crunch as needed.

Isn't the Studio 12 solid state? Which tubes are you referring to? Or maybe it has tubes meant like an effect like the 3300 has?
