Alternative to the Laptop Method?
Hi folks,
I apologise if this question has already been asked. I actually assumed that it had, but when I ran a search here and in Google nothing showed up.
Anyway, I have an Electro 6D and am on PC. My phone and Amazon tablet are both Android.
I have filled up my Electro's sample memory now (500mb). What I would like to be able to do is play the first of our band-sets using one 500mb sample library, and then the second set using a completely different 500mb library. At home I would simply hook up the Nord to my PC and run the dump via the Sound Manager s/w. But I am wondering if it is possible to not have to take my laptop out and perform the same task using the likes of my mobile or tablet, please?
The reason I ask is because I often hear of Apple users being able to manage such tasks using alternative means.
Many thanks in advance for any help offered here.
Cheers,
Paul David Seaman

Re: Alternative to the Laptop Method?
Nope. You'll need a Windows or Mac laptop, or a Windows tablet.
Also, keep in mind how long a 500 mb wipe-and-load will take. You'd better have a long break between your sets.

Oh, so a Windows tablet then. Obviously the task can't be executed on an Android or Apple phone?anotherscott wrote:Nope. You'll need a Windows or Mac laptop, or a Windows tablet.

I would estimate around 10 minutes loading time?anotherscott wrote:Also, keep in mind how long a 500 mb wipe-and-load will take. You'd better have a long break between your sets.
Intervals are either 15 or 20 minutes long.

Best to try it out first at home, as changing out the whole library may take much longer.monsterjazzlicks wrote: I would estimate around 10 minutes loading time?

Re: Alternative to the Laptop Method?
Nope, as there is no Nord Sound Manager for Android or iOS; loading time can be shorter if you have common piano and synth samples across backups (NSM will cache them and not reload them during Restore, if already present on the keyboard), but you talk about a "completely different" set so, as suggested by WannitBBBad, it is better to test the total restore process duration at home first.monsterjazzlicks wrote:Oh, so a Windows tablet then. Re: Alternative to the Laptop Method?
You can also create bundles for songs which load much faster than full backups.
Are you sure you need the full 500M sample space ? Samples are optimised and highly compressed, strange you need all that storage for just 1 set

Everybody's hoping for iPad versions. But so far, nothing.monsterjazzlicks wrote:Oh, so a Windows tablet then. Obviously the task can't be executed on an Android or Apple phone?anotherscott wrote:Nope. You'll need a Windows or Mac laptop, or a Windows tablet.
It seems likely that the next major revision will be macOS/iPadOS hybrid.

Re: Alternative to the Laptop Method?
I think some of it is up to Apple. Apple has been very restrictive about what can be done via an iPad's expansion port. Even though there pre USB-C there have still been lightning--and before that, even 30-pin--adapters that provided the iPad with a standard USB port, many standard USB devices would not be recognized, including hard drives, keyboards, mice, printers, etc. Some of this functionality has subsequently been added, but the iPad's USB connection (or iOS's support for it) still doesn't provide all the functionality you get on a Mac/PC. It's very possible that what the Nord software does--e.g. "see" the kind of flash that's in the Nord, recognize what's on it, and write additional data to it--may be beyond what iOS can do, or beyond what Apple permits third-parties to do.analogika wrote: Everybody's hoping for iPad versions. I am not an engineer, but I believe that that is more or less entirely incorrect.anotherscott wrote:I think some of it is up to Apple. Apple explicitly never provided a driver architecture for third parties to expand system functionality, for simplicity and security reasons. So either you coded support for your hardware into the app (like various third-party external storage solutions did), or you were stuck with whatever iOS/iPadOS supported out of the box.
The Lightning protocol itself is completely open for anybody to do almost anything with it (within the provided electrical specs, obviously). You just have to code for it yourself.
There is no technical reason on Apple's side why Nord couldn't have built a librarian/sample editor for iPad the way other vendors already have.
