sample editor question

Everything about Nord keyboards in general; which one to choose, the sound manager, sample editor, and general discussion about the sample and piano libraries.

sample editor question

Post by Richard Young »

I'm new to sampling so bear with..
Its a song I'm doing with a band....I have sampled a sequence and loaded it into Nord sampler but every time I play a note on the Nord that is not the one assigned, the...
...sample gets quicker as I go up keyboard and slower going down.
I want the sample to follow the notes I play (which it does) but the speed of the group of 4 notes in the sample changes and ends up out of time with the beat of the song.
I'm trying to follow a synth bass sequence in a Steve Winwood song called Valerie and trigger the sequence on the first beat of every bar (the sample lasts for one bar) So on key A it plays perfectly in time (120bpm) but there are a few chord changes so need the sampled bass sequence to follow the chords ...which it does.but depending on the notes either side of the set key of A,the timing incrementaly speeds up or slows down if I play a key to the left of the set sample note (A)..I created the sample and sequence in GarageBand then imported it to Nord sampler, which it did fine.
I've just read this back and I'm not sure if anyone can glean what I'm on about but I'll give it a try.
I must be doing something wrong or maybe what I'm trying to do is not possible.Hoping someone out there can help.

Hi Richard,

there is an option in Sample Editor called "unpitched", did you activate this?

Hi Schorsch, just tried 'unpitched' but the note pitch stays the same within the range which is what unpitched means....I need the note to follow the what I'm. playing....OK,so to recap my issue.... the sequence plays in time on A (the note I dragged the sample to) but on playing, say the next note up 'B',the pitch goes to B or in fact anywhere I choose to press the key, the pitch corresponds to that key which is obviously what I want...the problem is, that the further away from the set key A,the bpm of the sequence gets faster or slower either side of the set key A,which would mean playing live with a band using the notes that follow the chords and trigger the sequence, would be impossible as the timing will be all over the place.

In this case, you would either have to record individual samples for each key, or create samples for each key using a tool such as Audacity to change the pitch of the original sample without changing the tempo.

Yep WannitBBad,I beginning to think along the same lines, you've just confirmed it.I have Audacity so will go down that route.
I was hoping there might be an easier way than starting again. Thanks for your help.

Make sure you check the box for quality stretching (or something like that), as the timing won't be exact otherwise. Good luck!
