Semi-weighted waterfall compared to non waterfall (noise)

Everything about Nord keyboards in general; which one to choose, the sound manager, sample editor, and general discussion about the sample and piano libraries.

Semi-weighted waterfall compared to non waterfall (noise)

Post by nideto »

Hi,

I'm about to buy a Nord Electro 6D 73, didn't try it yet at the store but i'm wondering how a waterfall keyboard (Nord Electro especially so) feels in term of noise (key press). Is a waterfall Nord keyboard more noisy than a standard semi-weighted keyboard (non waterfall) or the opposite ? I guess it depends on the keybed brand, building ?

Right now i have a Novation Sl61 mk3 midi controller. It feels good but i'm looking for a 2nd keyboard in the same league (noise level), it is really important for me because of my medical condition. Got hyperacusis and tinnitus and for example i can't play on a full weighted keyboard because of keys / hammers noise which lead me to increase volume too much (and damaging my ears). Thanks.

I did a quick voice memo recording for you from my iPhone - it’s not super scientific but may help. I used the same “riff” and tried to make consistent in pressure and speed.

The Rev2 has a synth keybed (TP/9S I believe)

The NS3C and NW2 have the waterfall TP/8O.

The Nord Piano 4 has a fully weighted hammer keyboard.

Yes, it depends on the particular action. The only inherent difference between waterfall and non-waterfall semi-weighted keys is the physical shape of the front of the keys, which doesn't affect keypress noise.

Alright, wasn't sure if the waterfall shape could affect that noise.

And thank you so much for you time MarkJames, for recording this ! Not a lot of differences between those semi-weighted keyboard, maybe the prophet is a little quieter ?
Rev2 must be a great synth ! (love prophet 5 sounds)

The Rev2 is a bit quieter but the waterfall isn’t bad at all.

I bought the module version originally but then got a good deal on the keyboard version and will be selling the module. While I have the Wave 2 there is enough difference.
