how to get the sound norah jones is using here

Post by kgoess »

Norah Jones performing Blue Christmas at the Empire State Building a few days ago, it looks like a Nord she's playing. Any idea how I get or approximate that sound on my Electro 6? I've only just started experimenting with the non-piano sounds.

Not sure if you can get this sound just from your Electro, she’s playing it through a Fender Guitar Amp which adds a lot to it

HI KGoes,

Happy New Year!

I suppose it's a case of "how serious" about it do you want to be. I mean, if you used one of the Wurlitzer Pianos (there are two) with some Tremolo FX and a Room Reverb I don't think anyone in the audience would notice. Plus it will be Xmas so everyone will be drinking and talking loudly. Try 'B32' (Small Reeds').

As Schorsch alludes to, you will need to experiment with the Nord's amp/drive settings under the 'Speaker/Comp.' panel.

However, if you are making a recording of the song then some more detailed listening would probably be required.

Ray Charles and The Carpenters are the one's to listen to for the Wurlitzer (I feel); alongside quite a lot of country music (and maybe some early Elvis?).

Hope this helps somewhat. There will probably be some more knowledgeable folk on the forum (as I'm still relatively new). And you have already received two responses within 55 minutes of you joining the forum - so that's a good start!

Cheers,

Paul

Happy New Year and welcome to the Forum! As noted by Paul, a Wurlitzer piano combined with the Tremolo effect (Effect 1) would sound nice. The Twin amp simulation with a little drive might get close to what's heard on the video, however depending on your speaker setup, it might sound nice even without the Amp simulation. As traditional cone speakers top out around 5 kHz or so like in the Fender amp, the EQ might come in handy to cut out the higher frequencies such as setting the midrange frequency at 6-8 kHz and cutting it back while keeping the high EQ flat. Good luck!

HI KGoes,

"Welcome to the forum," I should have said!

(Please see attach.)

If you have not done so already, download the Nord Sound Manager, and also make sure you have the latest OS on your Electro.

Some expert advice above from WannitBBBad.

Good luck mate.
