Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 as a standalone mixer ?

Post by Projet Xion »

Hi all,

I would like to replace both my old Yamaha mixer and M-audio soundcard for a new audio interface.
I use Cubase and I need to record tracks sometimes in my DAW.
I've got a Nord piano 4 and I need an audio interface with standalone mode that allows me to play the piano (I would plug my powered monitors on the Scarlett too) even when my computer is off.

I was thinking about the Scarlett 8i6 3rd gen : I would use the line entries 3-4 at the rear of the interface.
Do you think it's a good idea to use this audio interface as a mixer too ?
I read somewhere that the gain level is very low with the lines entries on the Scarlett 8i6 so I'm not sure it's a good option...

Maybe someone here use it or could give me an advise ?

I would go the other way and look for a mixer with an integrated USB audio interface and multitrack recording capability. This would give you full control of all channels in standalone mode as well as when connected to the DAW, while the Scarlett provides for example no volume control over inputs 3+4 when in standalone mode ....

I see what you mean, do you have any reference to give me for a USB mixer for more or less 300€ ?
I would like a USB mixer with low latency, I often use my NP4 to play virtual instruments in Cubase.
I just need stereo inputs for the piano and another pair of entries for guitar and mic.

It depends on your needs like for example

- how many and which kind of channels
- multitrack recording or is recording of the sum (stereo Main out) sufficient
- effects section or not

A good one for multi track recording is the Presonus StudioLive AR8c but it’s above your budget: https://www.thomann.de/fr/presonus_stud ... 9&reload=1

I suggest you just do a search based on your minimum requirements to find a suitable one

Thank you very much Schorsch.
A little too expensive for me indeed.

Regarding the volume control over inputs 3+4 on the Scarlett.
I assume it can be controlled by the focus control software ?

If the gain level is not too low it could be enough for me.

Yes it should be controlled from the PC but not when in standalone mode - just so you know. But if that’s enough for you Then go for the Scarlett which is a good piece of hardware

Regarding the USB mixers, this little Yamaha AG-06 maybe could make the job ?
It can be powered by a phone charger and the number of inputs is ok for me.
Now I don't know about the quality...

The Yamaha MG10 XU seems good too (and with a real power supply).

Yes the AG-06 could make the job if you are ok with just the two main outputs routed to your DAW for recording, not the 6 input channels individually - same for the MG10-XU.

Why don't you order one and check, you have a 30-day money-back guarantee at Thomann if you are not satisfied

I have both the Focusrite 8i6 and the Yamaha MG10XU 10-channel Mixer with USB and FX. The mixer was $171 USD at Sweetwater (part of a large order so I got a good discount). This mixer should meet the use case you described. The 8i6 will do what you described, but you will have limitations as explained in an earlier response in this thread. Good luck!
