NS2EX Synth Section error / high notes cut off
hi all,
Looks like i have an error in my synth section.
The problem is that when I play a chord with my sustain pedal on , it is cutting off the high notes.
No problems when sustain pedal is off.
I have the same problem with All the sounds from the synth section
please take a look at the video i have uploaded, so you can see and hear the problem.
I first play sustain pedal off. Then with sustain pedal on, the high notes off the strings is cutting off when I hit the low keys.
My OS is v3.00
my sustain pedal is a Roland DP-10
System:
type: Auto=Closed
Func: Sustain
At the moment i have a lot of questions:
Is this normal ?
Is it the same on the NS classic, NS2 or NS3 ?
Something with my settings ?
Can this be fixed by a software update ?

Re: NS2EX Synth Section error / high notes cut off
Hi supermingwoe,
The bass notes you are playing with your left hand, do they also include the synth sound, or is it just piano?
Because maybe you are using too many voices of the synth section at the same time, which occurs (more) easily when combining unison (often used with synth strings) and sustain pedal. In that case newly played notes may replace existing notes, so some notes of your chord will stop sounding.
Hope this helps,
Albert

Hi Wartaler,
Yes , sound is a Piano and Strings from the synth section.
I have uploaded a new video with strings only, you can see that playing new high note chords is also giving a problem.
When i hold down the bass notes, all fine (with sustain pedal on).
No problems with Organ and Piano section.
I really hope this is a problem that can be fixed with an OS update.

Re: NS2EX Synth Section error / high notes cut off
I'm not sure if it would make sense comparing it with my generations older Stage,
Looking at your video and reading the 2EX specs (18 voice polyphony, independent of unison) I'm not sure if polyphony is the problem, but with sustain active you may build up more voices than you think, it would help if you could tell what your synth and panel settings are, and perhaps try to check when it occurs systematically, and hopefully someone with a 2EX will chime in..

Re: NS2EX Synth Section error / high notes cut off
I'd say almost certainly just a polyphony issue. I doubt it has anything to do with high notes vs. low notes. Instead of holding a high chord and playing a bunch of different low notes unti the high notes cut off, I bet you could hold a low chord and play a bunch of different high notes, and it would then be the low notes that cut off.

Yeah, I agree, and depending on how voice stealing & priority in the 2EX is organised, it could affect oldest, highest or lowest notes,.anotherscott wrote:I'd say almost certainly just a polyphony issue. I doubt it has anything to do with high notes vs. low notes.

Re: NS2EX Synth Section error / high notes cut off
I think you both are right. I really thought i did the right thing to choose the NS2EX , but i really feel limited in my play now.wartaler wrote:Yeah, I agree, and depending on how voice stealing & priority in the 2EX is organised, it could affect oldest, highest or lowest notes,.anotherscott wrote:I'd say almost certainly just a polyphony issue. Any NS3 owners can confirm that this problem will not occure on a NS3 ?

Re: NS2EX Synth Section error / high notes cut off
NS3 has an extended polyphony in the synth section, 34 vs 18 see https://www.nordkeyboards.com/products/ ... ison-chart, but still it is not infinite, so potentially/technically note stealing can still occur (as in any/most other keyboards having a finite polyphony, btw), particularly if layering 2 synth section as they share the total polyphony.supermingwoe wrote:I think you both are right. The problem imho has to do with using the sustain with synth sounds in the same way as the piano and/or assigning synth sounds to the whole extension of the keyboard when layered to pianos; when using Piano + Strings/Pad I tend to limit the synth layer to the central part of the keyboard i.e. the real extension of strings or "where they matter" (to me and/or for the song) and never felt a problem with my ex-NS2.

Yes, this are typical maxing out the polyfony limit in the synth section because you are triggering a new note when you are using the sustain pedal.
Years ago, when I was boring at a gig, I used to play with this on my D50 or M1. Hold down a chord with sustainpedal, listen to the highest note in the chord that was played as first note in the chord, and tapping one of the other notes in the chord until the highest note disappeared.
