Sustain pedal with pedal noise

I can confirm that the Korg DS1-H pedal works very satisfactorily on the Nord Stage 3. I had first bought the Nord Triple Pedal for testing, but was disappointed with the overall quality - and the price is definitely too high for that (it's just a modified standard Fatar pedal). I also had to set the pedal noise to +6 dB to make it present enough for me.

With the Korg I went back to 0 dB and the sound is nice and the dynamic works well. The half-damper function is a little bit difficult, because the transition range of the Korg seems to be very small. But you can live with it for 55 EUR.
In contrast, the quality of the Korg pedal is far better, it's very solid and doesn't slip away.

OK, I have to put my first positive experience into perspective after playing with it a bit longer: As others have already reported, the Korg DS1-H occasionally "loses" the open sustain, i.e. the pedal "closes" even though it is fully pressed down. But this behavior appears completely irregular and not reproducible.

The DS1-H can also not be used as a "normal" pedal (i.e. without pedal noise) on the Stage, since it does not work with the other settings (open or close). What a pity, because it is simply an excellent and high-quality part.

Is there any way to modify the pedal so that it is definitely "fully open" when pressed down?

I have the KorgDS1-H and it triggers all the damper sounds HOWEVER, I can't get it to sustain the NS3 past the half pedal (half sustain sound).
I also have a Casio SP20. It works as a sustain pedal and also triggers the damper sounds!!

Does the normal nord branded sustain pedal work with the "pedal noise" feature? Should I spend $100 on that bad boy or just look into a cheaper option basically what I'm trying to determine.

Welcome as a NS3 owner

You need the triple pedal in order to get pedal noise from the board. The single pedal does not enable that feature as it only transmits on/off state and not anything that can be used to detect the velocity you press with (the pedal noise is velocity sensitive).

As far as i know there are no sustain pedals out there to get half pedal and pedal noise - except for Nord Triple Pedal.
But it is possible to have both via MIDI - meaning to use a continuous pedal (e.g. Roland DP-10) connected to a midi controller. To achieve this you need an Arduino and build your own "Midi-Box".

Based on the developements of guenterguenter I developed my own Arduino based midi box. You can find my ardiuno sketch at the end of the thread (posted 25 Dec 2020). I'm using my midi box since end of 2020 and it's still working fine!

There is only a little problem using Sustain pedal via Midi (in general): When holding the (Midi) pedal, newly activated engines or switched programs don't recognized the hold. You will have to re-press the pedal again. This is not the case when using Sustain pedal the "normal way" (via Sustain pedal Jack).
Regarding this I use my midi-box only for rehearsal at home. But especially there it's quite fine to have half pedaling and pedal noise

Yes, provided that the external controller can handle a continuous sustain pedal like the DP10 and generate continuous values of CC64 from it, you can.

YES, I do!
The problem is: As far as I know there are no MIDI boxes out there that can handle CC64 in "the NORD way".
You can't have pedal noise with sending continous values on CC64. Continous values will produce unwanted/loud pedal noises. Anyway if you do so you can have half pedal, but you need to disable pedal noise on every program (where it's enabled).

To figure out which resistance values the Nord wants to get the desired function a Roland EV5 controller can be connected instead of the sustain pedal it will be recognized as a triple one. e.g. a Korg DS1H can be internally tuned to give exact this resistance values for suitable half pedaling.
Best values are 14 to 18K idle and 250 ... 350R fully depressed. (Resistance Stereo Jack Tip to Sleeve)

I wonder what you mean by "can be internally tuned" ? I have the Korg DS1H and confirm that the range between "open"/half/"close" is too small with the NS to perfectly enjoy it.

I have opened it, but I don't see anything to tune the range and/or the min/max spots. So I guess I would have to change the potentiometer ?
