Electro 6 vs Piano 4 ...?

Post by RafalSC »

I'm thinking about the Nord Electro 6 HP vs Nord piano 4. I like the weighted keyboard but I also want it to be portable. I have a Nord Lead A1 but I need piano sounds and synth libraries from Nord. I don't use organ sounds ... What do you think - which choice is better? Is the synth section identical in ELECTRO 6 and Piano 4? Will I load all 3.0 libraries into both?

The E6 has 4 amount settings (including off) for velocity response (for volume or filter) whereas the NP4 has only on/off. The available sample library is the same. Since organ doesn't matter to you, the biggest difference will be the lower travel weight of the Electro vs. the better feelingpiano action of the NP4.

Couldn’t agree more. I know some someone with a Nord piano and now he has bought a cheap and lighter Yamaha for the weight saving, he still has the Nord piano so that defeats the object?
I bought the Electro 5HP for this reason. Just be aware that some on this site think the action is less responsive. I do play some stuff which gets demanding and by the end of 2 x 1hr sets my right hand gets a bit tired on a trio gig if I am doing all the soloing. With a quartet sharing solos or a big band it’s fine you sort of get used to it. That is the action / weight compromise

I like vibe of the Nord, it’s quite cool and I can pick it up! The Electro 6 should be an improvement - it has three part multi timbrality. I would have piano and pad as main sound, the organ as a soloing option. Unfortunately this is where the HP action is not that organ friendly if you are traditional. For me I would but a cheap master and access the organ from that. You say you are not that bothered about organ sounds but if you had an Electro it is a great option and one the instruments design strengths

I have a Nord Lead A1 but I need piano sounds and synth libraries from Nord
The synth libraries from nord is just sampled sounds, the A1 you have is by far superior in the synth area than those samples. If you wanted to use them as an oscilator and be able to modify them then you would need a wave or stage, elecrto's modulating tools are very limited. The only use you can make with them when owning a nord piano or electro, is layering or splitting a pad for example, with a piano.
You mentioned that you don't need the organ, so a combination of the A1 you already have with a nord piano is the ideal for you. However, if carrying around two boards is a problem and still need good piano and synth, then you go for a stage compact (even if not using the organ of it) or other brand.
To make it more simple: decent organ>nord c2d, decent piano>nord piano (portable) or nord grand / decent synth> nord lead series or wave (+samples as sound source) / very good piano and organ>nord electro / very good piano, organ and synth>nord stage.
The conclusion is that nord is making decent products for specific use, but if you need a combination there are some limitations, not so serious though. Hope it helps!

I see RafalSC and many others mention about the ‘desirability’ of the sample section because of the synth library. It’s very frustrating trawling through 100’s of samples hoping you find the one you need. I’d always use a real editable synth, preferably analog.

I think there may have been a bit of terminology confusion here. Yes, the OP referred to the "synth library" of the NP4 and NE6, but if you look on the Nord web site, there is no such thing. It is called the "sample library". The confusion may arise from the front panels of those boards calling that section the "sample synth" section. The OP already has th "real editable synth" you suggest for his synth sounds (a Nord Lead A1), his interest in NP4/NE6 are the piano sounds and the sampled instrument sounds that get loaded into the sample/synth sections, not the "synth" sounds per se.

Hi-

If you already have the A1, I would go for the Electro, as it gives you more flexibility. Having Piano, Organ, and Synth along with the A1 is a good combination. It would give you 7-part multitimbral ability between the two boards. You never know when you might need an organ sound!

Thanks for the answers.
I need to play the NP4 keyboard if it's good .... worth the price ...
I forgot to write that I have a Korg Kronos and it actually depends on a more portable and desirable weighted keyboard. Because sometimes I don't want to move Kronos from home ....
ps.
I hate organ sounds .... :)

I played Np4 and my impressions are:
1. Piano sound weak ... "muddy"
2. Keyboard work very loud :?
3. Key action ok.
4. For the money there are better choices ...
So NP4 is out.
I played NW2 and I have to say he was very successful! Very good synth keyboard action and very good sounds.

There are obviously different preference for piano and if you're used to the Korg sounds, you may be biased towards a somewhat different spectrum.

Nevertheless, the Nord pianos should not be dull, and there are many to choose from. They all sound more like a real piano, and may need some EQ to be more like what you're used to.

Also, how did you listen to them? Nord needs good amplification to bring out the full tone, so if the amp isn't up to speed, you may need even more tweaking.

Did you try eg the bright, the silver or the white with done EQ.

In any case, if you get a ever wish to try it out again, make sure to use good amps (or headphones), check many of the piano models and don't need shy with done eq (which don't other brands may have baked into the sample).
