NS3 Leslie noises WITHOUT playing notes?

Post by WaveOramalainen »

Hey guys,
I heard a recording of someone playing an intro to a rock classic...
It sounded like the Leslie was on, and you could kind of hear it making distorted noises - EVEN when no organ notes were heard.
This was apparently a recording of the NS2, but I own an NS3 and want to know if
a) I heard right , and
b) I can do it on the NS3

as it makes for a quite cool intro effect :-)

Cheers!

Was he using a Vent? I know they will produce a Leslie noise in an extreme setting. Don’t think the Nord will do this on its own.
Or, was he using a real Leslie? Perhaps a sample?

Both the Electro 3 and 5 have a setting where you can imitate rather extreme tonewheel leakage and crosstalk - so much so that there will even be an audible soundscape without playing. Maybe the Stage has it as well?

If you're talking about this grinding, subdued roar of a badly maintained Hammond into a fully-turned-up Leslie, that's not possible with the Nord Leslie sim AFAIK.

I have no idea of what kind of sound you are after, but you could make a patch with the pink (or white) noise sample in the synth section and set the Rotary effect to process the synth.
If you set the Unison mode to 1, the effect gets even more pronounced.

Stage 2 (EX) / 3 can’t produce that noise with organ only, as “vintage 1” and “vintage 2” settings only produced cross-talk and noise when playing.
Up to Electro 5 the series had a third vintage setting, that also (as I read) makes the noise when no note is played.
Electro 4 Manual...
“Do not forget to try out the four tonewheel modes that are avail- able in the B3 menu, see page 19. These will dramatically change the sound of the B3 model from squeaky clean to a battered, old work horse.”

And yes, the Ventilator does this on its own - I also like that ...

Love that whooshing sound of a close mic'd, super driven Leslie letting you know it's about to scream before even the first note is played!

This sounds like a nice idea, gotta try it out!
Looked at the Ventilator, yes it's prolly a nice tool but a bit far out for me to shell out for it :-)

Thanks for all the good know-how and suggestions, guys! :yourock:

Cheers;

C2D does it via Vintage 3 setting -- factory default. Many new C2D owners call/write about it as soon as they get it out of the box, worried that something is wrong with the instrument.
