Re: Please post ONLY if you are having Mod Wheel / Morph iss

I have the same problems.
I bought my NS 3 compact in december last year.
The mod wheel did not work. The problem was already discussed in this forum. The cable was not fixed properly inside. We repaired it in my music shop.
After one key did not work again, I got a new Stage 3 compact.
This was the first episode of my Nord adventure.

Now after I have the new one, the mod wheel does not work 100% again. I checked the cable inside by myself already. But everything seems to be ok.
When I morphe something to the Mod Wheel and I hit the keys strong or i touch or knock near the mod wheel on the surface of the NS 3 I have function of the mod wheel without using it.
The same thing that I see in a post here.

I can not use the mod wheel.

Nord - please tell me what I can do. I don't want to go and ask in my shop again. Please tell me how I can fix it. Or somebody fix for me.
This is my first nord instrument. I never had problems with my Roland, Yamaha Stuff. I am little bit disappointed. I thought I bought a high class instrument for a upper price level. I don't care the price, but I want value for money.

Thank you in advance

If you knock it and it changes, then it can be only 2 things: the pot is making an intermittent contact or the connector/circuit is making an intermittent contact.
Have you tried resetting the connector? Have you tested the pot with a multimeter?

Hi all!

Some update about my case:
I got my NS3C back from Sweden, it was serviced in Nord ”headquarters” and I truly wish that my problems are now behind. I also asked what they did and got an answer that they ”soldered the leads directly to the panelboard. The connector is quite tight and close to one of the keys in the keybed, and to avoid this the leads are soldered instead.”

I also had rare but frightening boot up issue (NS3C did not power on but remained totally black and silent). This was fixed with whole motherboard replacement.

All I can say that Nord handled my case marvelously - they responded fast, kindly and seriously. Process went very smoothly.

I had the same issue. I worked with Nord Tech Support to check the connectors and re-route the wires, but the problem persisted. Sweetwater replaced the unit for me and the replacement has had no problems at all. This was a few months ago.

So I just took delivery of a nice new stage 3 compact and guess what! The mod wheel doesn’t work at all. :-/ any tips on how to open it to see if the connector just came unseated in transit?

Although I replied to this thread earlier, here is my update.

After I dropped a spot of glue on the plastic connectors, the issue went away for a while, but months later came back so bad, I couldn't depend on the wheel. I was going to send it in, but didn't want to drive the hour each way and be out of my keys for that long.

So I asked Pablo, through the contact Nord page, what the fix was. And yes, it is solder the wires directly to the connector. The top comes off pretty easily and if you disconnect the ribbon cable from the main board you can take the whole top and lay it on its front, giving you easy access to the connector. I cut the existing connector off of the wires, crimped some molex pins on the wires so I could slide them onto the connector pins and they would stay there, then I put heat shrink on the wires and soldered the pinned wires to the connector, slid the heat shrink over the connections and I am gold now. Very glad I could do it at home.

@SOULidarity, do you happen to have any pictures of the process? And where is the contact info for Pablo, is it on NordKeyboards.com or here - I didn't see it on his profile in this site.

The normal method is to shine a spotlight with a silhouette of mastodon ears onto the clouds. You could also go denenenenenenene. I don't think the last bit is strictly necessary.

Sweet, it was just the connector. Piece of cake to fix. Stuck a bit of gaff tape on it to hopefully reduce its desire to come free ever again. It had a slight "click" to it when I connected it though, so I think it's probably fine.

My mod wheel isn’t 100% reliable and I have to tap or knock around it to make it work again, when it happens.
I’ll open it up and check the cable cconnector / re-seat as this reassuringly seems to be the most common fix.
I have generally avoided using the wheel for quite a while now so it would be good to get full use of this again.
