NS2: receiving but not sending MIDI on global channel

Post by bgaeta »

I have searched but so far have come empty-handed, and I suspect it can’t be done but better make sure:

I want to be able to change programs on the NS2 using MIDI program change messages, but I don’t want the NS2 to send MIDI on the global channel - the extern section does the job well and the global channel messages just double everything and play parts I dont want to play on the receiving synth (Korg Kronos)

If I turn global channel off then I can’t find a way to change the Nord program from my iPad. If I leave it on then it sends MIDI on the global channel in addition to the channels selected in the Extern sections which plays Timbres I don’t want play on the Kronos plus wastes MIDI bandwidth.

My setup: iPad running OnSong sending program changes to the whole rig, NS2 sending MIDI to Korg Kronos and TC Helicon Voicelive using the Extern sections. Korg Kronos sends MIDI to individual slots or instruments of the NS2 as programmed. A Roland SPD6 played by the singer sends MIDI to the Kronos and the NS2 to trigger sounds and samples in some songs. Everything is interconnected and routed using on old style first generation iConnectMIDI.

Any solutions I have missed?

Have you tried setting Midi Ctrl Change Mode and Midi Prog Change Mode to 'receive' only? This should at least stop all program changes and CC messages from the global channel. I'm not sure if it also stops Midi note events. If it doesnt then the only alternative within the NS2 is to do something with the MIDI global channel setting. From what I read in the manual you can set this to 'OFF' or either DIN or USB port. Perhaps it's possible to split your Midi traffic by making the global channel work through DIN and the external through USB (or the other way around)?

Alternatively you could make the receiving application ignore the NS2's global channel but I agree thats not a pretty solution.

Third option would be to but some form of midi processing application in between the instruments and filter out the global channel that way.

Either you can connect the iPad to the NS via USB and not DIN (but looks like the iConnectMidi does not allow this) or , easier, set the Global Channel to one no other instruments is “listening to” (and disable sending PC and CCs as suggested n teh post above ) then don’t care about the “additional MIDI traffic”, should not be a problem in a relatively simple setup as yours.

Thank you for the ideas! Doesn't turning off sending of Program changes and Controllers also disables these being sent through the EXTERN sections or only the Global channel? In any case it's unwanted notes that is my greatest concern, but I found out that the iConnectMIDI allows filtering off specific MIDI channels so that's what I'm going to try.

Only the Global Channel.

Global Channel will always send notes on the global channel unless you set it to Local Off.

EXT will always send notes, but you can use a keyboard split so that it sends only over a very small range, just a handful of notes from the top or bottom of the keyboard, maybe you could make use of that. You might even be able to Octave Shift them, and then set your receiving device to be silent for that extra high or extra low range of notes, so you'd be triggering no audible note even if you hit one of those keys.
