Funny... I have had many RDs before my Nords: I had RD600, RD700sx and RD700Gx and lastly Gx1 expansion which made it pretty close to newest Nx. I must say only things I sometimes miss is Roland's more grand-like and more silent action, better velocity and dynamic range adjustability. Those are features that really should be improved with Clavia's products.

But believe me, Nord piano sound is light years ahead of Rd500 (and IMO other RDs too). Ok, this is very subjective, I know...

BTW One thing I remember from moving from Rd600 to Rd700Sx: piano sounded terribe in 7OOSx, but then I realized that it was stereo sampled. So in my (at that moment) mono system it sounded bad. I simply needed two monitors to make it sound good. Nord is basically similar, even though it has mono output...

Hello roycool,
Welcome to the forums.

I'm curious as to how long you've been playing the Roland.
When you bought it, did you like it as much as you do now?

Can you describe in more detail what you don't like about the Nord piano sound?
Which piano sounds have you tried?

Have you listened with quality headphones, or your normal sound system (if not headphones)?
I'm not sure what you mean by "miss the stereo pan"

Cheers, Hanon

I've been playing about 10 years on the Rd 500 .

Too soft, too sweet !

I have a real KAWAI U2 upright and it sounds much more modern and mettalic than all the Nord's sounds !
Which piano sounds have you tried?
All of them !
Have you listened with quality headphones, or your normal sound system (if not headphones)?
Both !

the stereo on the Nord sound is very thin, i founded the RD 500 much more open.

I understand that the Nord sounds are more realistic than the RD 500 but if i compare the nord to the Kawai U2 i miss the same thing !..

The "agressive" , rock , "metalic" sound is not there on the Nord...

Interesting.
Did you (from day one) always like the Roland, or did it grow on you the more you played it?
What prompted the change?
Cheers, Hanon

Did you (from day one) always like the Roland,
Yes I did !

I wanted to change because of the poor Rhodes sounds of the RD 500.

When i heard the pianos sounds from the demos of the Nord i fiynd them very realistic.... but in fact, I think that I don't espacially like this realistic and smooth sound !

I used to play a RD-500 and later RD-100 but almost exclusively Grand Piano 1, which I liked a lot. But compared to the Nord, they are just not comparable IMHO. To be fair though, there are around 15 years between the manufacturing of both instruments/samplesets!
On the NP, what IMHO comes closest to the Rock kind of Piano would be to me the Yamaha Closed C7 Grand, dynamics setting at "2".
The Rhodes on the very early Roland Stage Pianos are not the best IMHO, they sound to me more like a celesta! The 300 and 700 are much improved, but if you don't like it on the NP, you could try out the Korg (SV1 Kronos), or even a Motif which has a decent Rhodes Sounds to see if you prefer it and maybe consider a trade.
Before that, however, I would seriously use all the sound shaping possibilities on the NP to see if you really cannot get the sound you are looking for.

Cheers, Johannes

Johannes,

Anyway what i already found is to get the dynamics on 2 or 3....

I got to forget the RD 500, that's the point ! :-))
