Looking for an AMP for rhodes/organ sounds

Hello,

i own a nord electro 5 d an I am mainly using rhodes and organ sounds these days ... i know overall active speakers/pa would be the best and i am playing at hoome through a pair of jbl lsr 305, at giggs i use the PA they have...
now i would like to have an tube amp for a more realistic rhodes and clavinet sound, a fender twin reverb would be nice i never tried out how it sounds, but its too expensive and heavy
any1 has experience with a smaller tube amp and the nord? does it sound better (rhodes) than a pa? any recommandations to max 400 euro?
also i read somehwere it should have at least '12 speaker to get the bass right

Your Nord Electro 5 has a few built-in speaker simulations for this very purpose. They aren't bad. I use them through decent PA cabinets, and I like the sound. I don't think you're going to find many people who play their keys through a guitar amp and like it.

yes I know ... but actually I only use my electro for those "oldschool" sounds, organ/clavi/wurlitzer etc.
I thought the sound for example of an fender amp would be more suited for that ... i am not so happy with the simulations or my jbl lsr 305 arent simpy good enough to get a nice sound out of it ..
also for gigging it seems much more easier to just carry an amp around which also would be my monitor

A previous bandmate got great sound for his rhythm guitar playing from his Fender Princeton amp, but I could only get a decent capture of it by micing the cab - just connecting a line out from his amp did not capture the sound. The same might be true for you if you rely on the guitar amp to create the sound. I find line out to much simpler to manage, so my preference for keys would be to try use whatever sim / effect is on your Nord, and have the amplifier itself be not adding an effect. I use an Electrovoice zx-a1, cphollis has posted a recent thread about the QSC 8.2.

Yep. I use a Blonde with a Moog synth to (have the possibility to) reach that lead guitar sound sometimes. In another band, I use a VT Bass DI to take the Moog bass into the rock, middier realm so that I blend better with guitars.

I remember having tested the Blonde, VT Bass and Liverpool with the Nord Electro. The Blonde is the most suited, to my ears. VT Bass is nice and Liverpool did not fit my tastes.

On the Character series 2nd iteration ("v2"), you can deactivate the cab simulation. That allows you to choose between clean sound with the pedal disabled, a bit dirrtier with just the preamp sim section, or all the way cab'd. Only problem is they are mono, main advantage besides sound is that the interface is just like having an amp at hand. Exactly as a Nord Electro.

For what it's worth...
On gigs, I play a Nord Stage 2 through a Spacestation v3 and a sub. I LOVE my on-stage sound, including the acoustic pianos, strings, horns, and synths within the live band mix.

To avoid hauling & setup time, I have a Nord Electro 2 sitting on top of a Yamaha electric piano at our rehearsal space. Our guitarist lets me use his Fender Hot Rod DeVille for amplification (I was quite reluctant to use it, at first). I have to say the organ, clav, rhodes and wurli sound AWESOME through this guitar amp. If you don't play acoustic pianos, or lush synth pads/strings/horns that require cleaner amplification, I highly recommend experimenting with ANY guitar amp and see if it suits your ears.

Roland Jazz Chorus 120 is a pretty amazing keyboard amp for all "vintage" sounds. Even acoustic pianos work OK - IMO better than through some dedicated "keyboard amps."

It's bulky and heavy though.

Props to the JC 120, my first serious "keyboard amp". But that's way back in the rear view mirror these days
