Drums!

Post by omvibraphone »

So, I've really enjoying using the Roland Kuit drum samples on my NS2, nothing like manual inputting of rhythms etc!

I was wondering if anyone has been able to put together any 808, 909, DMX etc drum machine samples into a NS2 sample bank? It would be a dream to have a bank of drum samples, say one octave per drum machine, for instant access to all those classic sounds. I actually have an Electribe ESX formatted set of samples on a CD, but have no idea about how to go about converting them etc.

Anyone up for the challenge?

Actually, it looks like I have wav. versions of the samples, which I guess may make things easier. Anyone?

Hi Om,

If you already have the .wav files, why not accept your own challenge, dump 'em into Nord Sample Editor and make your .nsmp file? After posting the new sample here your name will then live here in this forum in eternity!

Be sure to turn looping off on each individual sample -- unless you want some really weird results. :-)

Another tip: if you predetermine what notes you want your .wav files mapped to, edit their names to include note name or number information and the mapping will be done for you by the program.

Happy programming!

It might be useful to have a look at the standard GM/GS mapping of the sounds, so a standard MIDI file drum track could be played through the red monster without any fiddling.

Thanks for the feedback, gents. I've actually started to look into setting up the nsmp myself, but have run into a problem (possibly the first of many, I've not used the Nord Sample editor before) - the samples I have are at 48, and the Nord sample editor max is 44.1. Could anyone direct me to a simple sample conversion programme or page, a google search didn't seem to bring up anything that simple to use.

Audacity (linux, mac, pc) . Load the sample, set the Project Rate to 44.1 (bottom select box) and resample (Tracks>Resample...)

I use FormatFactory to convert audio formats.

So, an update... Finally had some time to spend putting together three separate drum 'instruments' mapped across my Stage keyboard, lots of Roland, Linn etc on there, about six kits per 'instrument'. I'll post them up here when i find some more time to finish them, pending two quick questions:
1. I want to leave some notes blank between the various kits on each instrument, how do I do that? Create a 'silent' wav for those notes? Or another way to do it? At the moment the proposed blank notes seem to play the nearest sample in differing pitches.
2. I am saving the files as 'project' files, how do I convert them to nsmp? Download them to my Stage, then upload them back to my computer? Or another way?
Any input appreciated, thanks!

Hi Oli,

Blank space between samples is much talked about in this forum. A search will yield multiple results. Some have ventured down that path and had difficulty with "blank" files. There are reports of success with using nearly blank audio files, something with a low level noise floor..

The Project files you are saving are very useful for revisiting the setup to make fine tune adjustments, but the final result is created and simultaneously installed on your instrument by hitting the GENERATE button, depositing the .nsmp file onto the Nord. Copies of that .nsmp can then be uploaded from the Nord to your hard drive.

Bless,

Pablo
