Getting Detuned Piano

Post by sgcustom02 »

When playing Lady Madonna, I've been using the "Honky Tonk" factory patch, which (to my ears) is shy of the mark.

In the late 70's/80's, I was using a Yamaha CP30 and would detune the left and right sides just a bit in opposite directions and it sounded perfect

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting that "slightly out of tune" honky tonk sound?

I made one for you. I layered two different grand piano sounds together, both with different types of chorus at different rates and speeds. One piano is +1 octave higher and mixed lower in volume, plus I used generous treble EQ to get that tack sound that is good for this.

If you download my sound, you'll probably just need to replace the pianos with whatever you have in you NS2 (I used Grand Imperial and Silver Grand samples).

Sorry, I just noticed you have an NE5 vs. NS2. Follow my suggestion on effects and it should be good. I'll try to get on my NE5 tomorrow.

Erm... in the NS2 there is a "slot detune" button in the piano section, that makes the perfect honky tonk. No need to fiddle with chorus effects ;-)

Erm...ok, I will see if that produces the complex cooking of the same caliber as two different chorus effects :)
The OP actually has a NE5, so it is irrelevant to him in any event.

I like using the chorus effects and stacking different piano sounds. One of my favorite gig sounds is a CP-70 stacked with acoustic piano, using different chorus and EQ on each slot.

Eric,

Thanks for providing the file.

BTW, which 2 pianos do you suggest I substitute in the NE5?

Also, how would I do it? (I'm relatively new to the Nord).

All the best :yourock:

I will try to get some time tonight with my NE5 and work up a file, but most any piano sound should be fine...you can use one piano engine on the NE5, but you could layer in a piano sample in the synth/sample engine (which I've done on the NE5 with decent results). To keep it simple, you can use whichever piano sound you like the most, add some chorus and hi EQ to make it cut.

Eric,

That would be great if you could work up a file for the NE5.

I'm still trying to get up to speed on the unit.

Ok, I just did a quick little sound edit for you on my NE5. I'm attaching the program file. You may have different pianos loaded, but I like the Grand Imperial XL. This sound is a layer of that piano with some chorus and EQ effects, combined with a sample called GrandPiano YaC7_ste CLv4, which is right from Nord's sample library, but I don't think it was loaded in the NE5 factory sample set (also attached to this message). The sampled piano is not anywhere as good as the actual piano portion of the instrument, but it's the poor man's way to layer two piano sounds on the NE5. On the sample, I've added some tremolo effects and put it through the same EQ as the Grand Imperial. I think it sounds pretty good. Let me know what you think - you can also play around with the effect settings, types, depth, etc. to taste.
