1964 Rhodes Fiesta Red Piano Bass

Post by bdodds »

Ok, I'm going to upload this one first. The Nord Sample Editor software is fantastically easy and simple to use and it nails all of the things you need to make samples, but for some reason it keeps locking up my computer solidly when I try to get the sparkletop piano bass samples done. So, this one gets uploaded first. This is the Fiesta Red piano bass on the right here:

You'll want to add about 50ms of release time to the patch once it's in otherwise there's an ugly click on note-off, but other than that it's pretty good sounding. Here's a link to the original wav file:

Enjoy!

Well, it's pretty easy stuff if the instrument lacks huge amounts of depth.. It would be great if Nord released tools to make .npno files, huh? Their Sample Editor is fantastic - it's so simple, fast, and most of all small. I've been using samplers and audio software since they started and their software is really great. Straightforward and with all of the necessary features implemented perfectly.

Interestingly, the sparkletop was giving me a lot of trouble last night - the software kept locking my computer hard while I was tweaking it, requiring a reset. I downloaded the sample earlier on before I started to fine-tune the sample start points and whatnot, and I noticed the B1 sample had some odd distortion in it. I looked at the waveform and that note was kinda loud, it might have amplitude enough to clip, but it wasn't clipping in any of the other software I was using. I tried lowering the volume on that one note and reimporting the wave file into the Sample Editor and not only was the distortion still there, but it still locked up my system. I lowered the volume to imperceptible and it still distorted and locked my system. I rerecorded that one note, pasted it in over the old one, and the problems all went away. Strange.

wow that sounds awesome, great job on the playing! do you prefer the fiesta to the sparkletop? we'll have to grab a thunderstorm sample and stick it up at the highest note or something, that's all that was missing.. how did you do that particular one - did you make an instrument with both in it, or was that a split? or was it two keyboards?

some random things i learned while tuning up the samples - if you have the software go through your file and automatically make a note for each amplitude transient it sticks the note start a little too close.. on the rhodes at least there's a few tiny wave wiggles before the tine is hit and the peak amplitude is reached.. in both cases i found that if i adjusted each note start so that the tine hit happened at about 30ms after start it sounded perfect.. otherwise there were clicks on some notes and things just weren't smooth enough.. also, if you tweak the amplitude level for triggering a new sample too high or too low you'll find that it'll cut some notes up into multiples or blend multiple notes as one, respectively.. best to keep the default and make sure you have pure silence between notes.. this program is some pretty slick stuff, i hope i get to use it again at some point..

Hi arecio,
I have played in many Doors cover/ tribute bands over the years.
Ray Manzarek is one of my favorite keyboardists.

One of the groups that I played with was popular with the Biker Club circuit of the '80s.
Those bikers didn't mess around. If you played something wrong in the first set, they'd throw things at you "kind of like Bob's country bunker" in the Blues Brothers movie, only most clubs did't have a barrier.
Fortunately their tolerance for mistakes got better as the night went on "the drunk factor".
You didn't dare try out any weak songs early in the night, but by about midnight you could add some weak stuff to your set, by 1am you were pretty much just practicing onstage.

Cheers, Hanon
